An association is lobbying for more help for these people to...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEAD IN:\u003cbr/\u003e              A squat in Rome is home to hundreds of refugees who live in cramped conditions with little access to healthcare and social services.\u003cbr/\u003e              An association is lobbying for more help for these people to intregrate into Italian society.\u003cbr/\u003e              \u003cbr/\u003e              STORY-LINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              This ugly concrete building is one of Rome's biggest migrant ghettos.\u003cbr/\u003e              Once part of a university complex, Selam Palace now hosts between 700 and 800 homeless refugees - migrants who requested asylum, and have been granted legal refugee status with proper documents. \u003cbr/\u003e              Most are from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan.\u003cbr/\u003e              The squat is the only home many families can afford.\u003cbr/\u003e              But they are doing their best to build a life here.\u003cbr/\u003e              Bereket Joannes works at a sewing machine inside the palace.\u003cbr/\u003e              He left Eritrea in 2011 but has struggled to find work in Italy.\u003cbr/\u003e              So he's drawing on skills he learnt back in his homeland to make some money.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Shoemaker, tailor, sometimes upholsterer - I repair chairs - because I don't like to waste time,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              He started with a stall at Porta Portese market in Rome. His customers are fellow refugees living in Selam Palace as well as Italians.\u003cbr/\u003e              Many of his Italian clients do not know where his workshop is, but according to Joannes, they appreciate his work and continue to call him. \u003cbr/\u003e              Sometimes he also lends a hand to other tailor shops.\u003cbr/\u003e              And he is most proud of the shoes he makes.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Yes, these (sandals) were all made by me. I sewed the upper, then I mounted it. I made the sole and the heel. I made everything,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              And work is hard to find for everyone who lives in Selem Palace. Around 76 percent of residents are unemployed, 9 percent work without a proper contract and just 16 percent have regular jobs, according to a survey carried out by the association \"Cittadini del Mondo\".\u003cbr/\u003e              The organisation works with the people who live here.\u003cbr/\u003e              It's stepping in to help because there is little assistance available from official channels.\u003cbr/\u003e              One of the association's social operators, Marianna Maggi, says there is a \"big flaw\" in government polices. She is critical of the authorities for doing little for the refugees once their asylum applications have been accepted.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"There are no long term policies intended to guarantee a gradual access to independence,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"This could mean a help to have access to public housing, or some kind of facilitation measures on rents, but above all policies of job placement and, and this is very serious, policies of language learning.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Conditions in Selam Palace are difficult. There is only one toilet for every 19 people here and just one shower for every 33 residents.\u003cbr/\u003e              Volunteer doctors provide basic healthcare.\u003cbr/\u003e              And the medical staff say working and living conditions are causing problems for these refugees.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Bone and muscular pains are due to the heavy work and also are caused by sleeping on ruined mattresses or on makeshift beds. That brings postural problems,\" says Dr Grazia Forte.\u003cbr/\u003e              Nils Muiznieks, former Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, visited Selam Palace in 2012 and called the conditions \"upsetting\".\u003cbr/\u003e              Cittadini del Mondo wants Italian language courses, job placement and help to access to public housing to stop these people being pushed to the fringes of Italian society.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Rome - 14 June 2018\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
