I feel great. Thanks for asking,\" Diamond said.\u003cbr/\u003e              He was there to pick up the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award, named after the famed songwriter.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Well, first of all he's one of the great lyricists in pop music, for songwriters, you idolize a guy like that. So it's big,\" Diamond said.\u003cbr/\u003e              The singer announced he was diagnosed with Parkinson's in January and canceled planned concerts. He did perform at the end of the show.\u003cbr/\u003e              Sara Bareilles was the recipient of the Hal David Starlight Award, an honor bestowed to young talent. She attributes writing the Broadway musical \"Waitress\" with helping her evolve as a songwriter.\u003cbr/\u003e              She also weighed in on the controversy over the Robert De Niro expletive about President Trump at Sunday's Tony Awards. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"I understand. Look, to be totally honest I agree with him. I don't know if it was the time or place for it, but you know what he's De Niro and I felt a bit of the night just moved past it and through it. It was a little shot in the arm for everybody who kinda was hungry for a political jolt, and for me it didn't overshadow the entire night. So, I feel really proud of the night,\" Bareilles said.\u003cbr/\u003e              She co-hosted the broadcast with Josh Groban.\u003cbr/\u003e              Actor Stephen Dorff came out to support his dad, Steve Dorff. He's written numerous hit songs, including \"Through the Years,\" and \"I Just Fall in Love Again\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Usher came to induct his friend, Jermaine Dupri. On the red carpet, he spoke briefly about Dupri who has co-written a number of the R\u0026B star's hits, including \"Nice \u0026 Slow,\" \"U Got It Bad,\" \"Burn\" and \"Confessions Part II.\" \u003cbr/\u003e              \"I go all the way back in the beginning of my career with Jermaine. And that to me really set an incredible relationship and foundation to be able to celebrate this moment, you know. Success is great, but who do you have with you in your in your hardest times. It's the people who help to articulate your message. And the fact that we've always been able to connect to help a lot of people through music. I'm just happy to be able to celebrate that and celebrate him tonight,\" Usher said.\u003cbr/\u003e              Dupri is the second hip-hop artist inducted into the Songwriters Hall, but he's the first to attend.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It's like history. It's starting to feel like something historic,\" Dupri said.\u003cbr/\u003e              Jay-Z was the first, but could not attend last year as wife Beyonce was about to give birth to twins. \u003cbr/\u003e              Dupri also remarked on it feeling odd since Mariah Carey, who he's won a Grammy with, was nominated this year, but didn't make the cut for the class of 18. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"The other part - the craziest part about this is that me and Mariah (Carey) was both on the ballot to get inducted this year, and I got in as she didn't. So that's what - that's, that's, that's the crazy part of it, you know what I mean? So it's got a couple of different dynamics to it, but that's probably the most dynamic there,\" Dupri said.\u003cbr/\u003e              Kool and the Gang were also inducted, and Robert \"Kool\" Bell was ecstatic about it.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I think it means a whole lot, you know, because when you write a song you don't know where it's going, or what's going to happen with it. And it makes up to the top, and then the people who vote for us, who voted for us for this, it's a wonderful thing,\" Bell said.\u003cbr/\u003e              Former member James \"JT\" Taylor was also there to accept the honor.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It's humbling. Ever since I got the call, I've been shaking more and more each time, you know. It's one of those things when you're writing a song, you know, you're just in the moment and you try to put your all into it and 20-plus years later you have this wealth of product that you've done. And to be recognized, you know, with your peers. It's just something you can really put into words. You know you don't really look for this. It's kind of like, just do the work and the rewards come later,\" Taylor said.\u003cbr/\u003e              Allee Willis was also inducted. She co-wrote the Broadway musical \"The Color Purple\" and Earth, Wind \u0026 Fire's \"September, as well as the theme song from \"Friends.\" Willis says the sitcom song can pull her out of a funk, especially since the show always seems to be on. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"You know every time you turn the dial. Like honestly sometimes if I'm depressed, I turn on the TV and go bang, bang, bang, boom - there it is. I'm OK,\" Willis said.\u003cbr/\u003e              Country music star Bill Anderson finds the Songwriters Hall of Fame induction to be the greatest honor. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Well, it really is. I was voted in the national Songwriters Hall of Fame back in 1975, and that's mainly for you know country music and the music we produce in Nashville. But boy, to be up here with some of the great names, everybody from Irving Berlin to Bob Dylan and millions in between.
