Tourists and football fans are set to roam...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              It's often called the world's largest \"open air constructivist museum.\" The Russian city of Yekaterinburg is home to around 140 constructivist buildings.\u003cbr/\u003e              Tourists and football fans are set to roam through its streets when Russia's World Cup kicks off this month.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              It's a combination of modern technology and engineering methods with the ethos of Soviet Communism.\u003cbr/\u003e              Constructivism - as it's known - was an innovative architectural style that became popular during the Soviet industrial boom in the 1920s.\u003cbr/\u003e              Constructivism in Sverdlovsk - as the city was known during Soviet times - started in the 1930s. \u003cbr/\u003e              Subordinating to Soviet ideology aimed at creating a new world, many architects implemented daring projects across the Soviet Union.\u003cbr/\u003e              As a booming industrial centre, Yekaterinburg became one of the biggest magnets.\u003cbr/\u003e              Pre-revolutionary wooden houses on its main street were replaced by 'City of the Future' forms, which symbolised the new social structure.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Here, the creation of new world was taking place through these functional structures,\" says historian Igor Yankov.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Here, we can see a living area of different quality. And we can see various social services detached: that's a cafeteria, that's a club, that's a bathhouse, that's a laundry, that's a kindergarten and so on, and so on.\"\u003cbr/\u003e               One of the most famous examples of constructivism in Yekaterinburg is the Dynamo Sports Centre.\u003cbr/\u003e              Shaped like a moving ship, it's located on a small peninsula on a city lake.\u003cbr/\u003e              V-shaped bay windows resemble a bow, windowed balconies look like lifeboats, and a roof structure on top of the main pavilion could almost be a captain's bridge.\u003cbr/\u003e              Nowadays, the monument is the centre of ongoing debate - many fear a proposed new church nearby may destroy the architectural homogeneity of the area. \u003cbr/\u003e              The Printing House with its continuous windows, stretching along the entire perimeter, a rounded façade supported by a single column and protruding stairwells encased in semi-circular glass cages, used to accommodate printing facilities and newspaper offices. \u003cbr/\u003e              Now it's occupied by cafés, a bookstore and a nightclub. \u003cbr/\u003e              The General Post Office was designed in the shape of a tractor to glorify agricultural workers. \u003cbr/\u003e              It initially housed a kindergarten, an 800-seat radio theatre and rooms for hobby groups as well as an intercity phone station, telegraph and post office that's still in operation today.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"The Post Office, I found it a very striking landmark,\" says Hanna Nabila, a visitor from Indonesia.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Because it's obvious, it's located in the centre. It's such a great representative.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Lenin Street and its surroundings also host a series of residential complexes, called 'Towns,' which were built for particular professions.\u003cbr/\u003e              Builders' Town for construction workers, Justice Town for judges and penitentiary workers, Medical Town for doctors, and - the most famous of them all - the Chekists' Town, for employees of the secret police. Cheka, later known as the KGB. \u003cbr/\u003e              The Chekists' Town's central architectural landmark is Iset Hotel, a former hotel-type dormitory, built in the shape of a semi-circle and resembling a sickle. \u003cbr/\u003e              Constructivist housing was full of experiments that affected people's lives. \u003cbr/\u003e              There were no kitchens or bathrooms in the apartments, as everyone was supposed to eat in common cafeterias, wash clothes at a common laundry and bath in a common bath. \u003cbr/\u003e              Chekists' Town is also widely known by locals for underground tunnels, which are surrounded by sinister urban legends.\u003cbr/\u003e              It's rumoured that in basement chambers the secret police tortured and executed those who were considered enemies of the Soviet regime.\u003cbr/\u003e              Nowadays, the complex is decaying like many other constructivist buildings in the city. \u003cbr/\u003e              Some buildings have not undergone major repair since their construction. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"When you remove plaster from the walls, there are wires going through everywhere,\" says tour guide Ildar Zalessky.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Possibly the Chekists' wiretapping (workers who) sat here. Like in the famous Soviet poster 'No talking'.\" \u003cbr/\u003e              Nikita Suchkov founded what's thought to be the only private constructivism museum in Russia. \u003cbr/\u003e              Called 'Cell F,' it's housed in a typical apartment for singles and small families, designed by legendary Soviet architect Moisei Ginzburg.\u003cbr/\u003e              Suchkov has renovated the apartment to show how people lived, but, unfortunately, most of the interior was lost. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Municipal and regional authorities have ignored this subject (of constructivism) because it was quite unimpressive architecture (for them),\" says Suchkov.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"After Perestroika, it was totally decrepit. And, of course, it requires huge resources to handle it professionally, as it happens in a civilized world. However, we must start somewhere.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The future of several examples of Soviet Constructivism remains anything but certain.\u003cbr/\u003e              The White Tower, a 30-metre (98 feet) tall structure located on the outskirts of Yekaterinburg, is now abandoned and slowly falling to pieces.\u003cbr/\u003e              Yekaterinburg will host four matches at the World Cup, all in the group stage.\u003cbr/\u003e              Egypt and Uruguay will meet on June 15 in Group A, before France comes to town on June 21 to face Peru in Group C\u003cbr/\u003e              .\u003cbr/\u003e              Next up will be Japan and Senegal in Group H on June 24, and then Mexico against Sweden in Group F on June 27.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Yekaterinburg, Russia - 20 May 2018\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
