The CBS television audience heard dead silence instead before he raised his arms -- twice -- and earned a standing ovation. \u003cbr/\u003e              The legendary actor urged the audience to vote in November and lauded Springsteen for his own political commitment before the singer sat at a piano for a moving performance based on his \"Springsteen on Broadway\" show that had him singing his classic hit, \"My Hometown.\" \u003cbr/\u003e              De Niro said of Springsteen: \"Bruce, you can rock the house like nobody else and even more importantly in these perilous times, you rock the vote, always fighting for, in your own words, truth, transparency and integrity in government. Boy, do we need that now.\" \u003cbr/\u003e              The anti-Trump sentiment swept backstage as playwright Tony Kushner and others from \"Angels in America\" spoke to reporters about its three big wins: best play revival and acting trophies for Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"I agree,\" Kushner said when asked about the De Niro moment, dropping an F-bomb of his own in relation to the president. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"I can't believe De Niro did that,\" Kushner said. \"Good for him. Everything tonight was, I mean the theme of the show is about devastation and communities in terrible pain and various possibilities of healing, starting with the Parkland kids, 'Band's Visit,' 'Angels', that's a very prominent thing and the country is in terrible trouble. I believe very deeply in the power of Democratic idea and I think our democracy is very old, 200-whatever years old and I think it's gonna survive this dreadful blight but it's terrifying and the damage that he's doing, not so much I think to the institution of governance but to the social fabric of this country and the way that he's cheapening and belittling this country's constitution and its history is appalling. One of the most stunning moments for the evening was when John Leguizamo talked about these kids who are now in cages in an abandoned Wal-Mart in Brownsville, Texas. The line from the poem 'What kind of times are these when to talk about trees is almost a crime because it implies silence about so many atrocities.' That's the world we're living in now but I really believe we're going to start the process of healing by getting control of congress and having a functional, at least 1/2 of a functioning congress again and I think after that the days of this entirely criminal and I think treasonous administration are numbered.
