The $40 million USD project, which includes Syrian bears and cheetahs from a lost era, is...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              After decades of planning and delays, Israel is opening the doors to a new museum of natural history in Tel Aviv.\u003cbr/\u003e              The $40 million USD project, which includes Syrian bears and cheetahs from a lost era, is aimed at increasing scientific education.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              Taxidermy hawks, pelicans and vultures are greeting visitors at the entrance to Tel Aviv's new Museum of Natural History.\u003cbr/\u003e              They're part of an exhibit on epic avian migrations, from Africa to Europe, through Israel. \u003cbr/\u003e              What's thought to be the last Syrian bear to inhabit the country, killed in 1916, and the last Asiatic cheetah, killed in 1911, appear like ghosts from a lost world.\u003cbr/\u003e              They're intended to teach visitors about the devastating changes to local habitats.\u003cbr/\u003e              The ultra-modern, ark-shaped edifice, opening in July, alongside Tel Aviv University's campus, houses over 5.5 million specimens of species from around the world. \u003cbr/\u003e              But the Steinhardt Museum of Natural History puts special emphasis on the flora and fauna indigenous to the holy land and the Middle East. \u003cbr/\u003e              The $40 million USD project, decades in the making, was funded in large part by American billionaire Michael Steinhardt, a major donor to Israel who keeps a menagerie of exotic animals on his New York estate north of Manhattan.\u003cbr/\u003e              Museum curators say the institution aims to raise public awareness about the natural world and environment.\u003cbr/\u003e              They hope to highlight both the country's ecological diversity at the crossroads of three continents, also the devastation wrought by modern development. \u003cbr/\u003e              Its halls combine traditional dioramas and interactive displays to showcase thousands of specimens. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"The main goal of the museum is to bring the public closer to nature.
