STORYLINE:    ...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Veteran politician Nabih Berri is almost guaranteed to be relected as speaker in Lebanon's parliament tomorrow.\u003cbr/\u003e              He has a long history of involvement in the country's politics.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              A Shiite warlord turned politician. One of the most powerful and enduring in Lebanon. \u003cbr/\u003e              Nabih Berri, now 80 years old, has held his post as speaker of the Lebanese parliament for a quarter of a century.\u003cbr/\u003e              He is set to be re-elected to the same post for the sixth time. \u003cbr/\u003e              A new assembly will convene tomorrow (Wednesday) following the national elections held earlier last month, and Berri will enjoy no competition: virtually no one has run against him in the past decades. \u003cbr/\u003e              He was elected as leader of the Amal movement in 1980, forging a strong alliance with then Syrian President Hafez Assad that later continued with Assad's son and successor, Bashar. \u003cbr/\u003e              In the bloody years of the Lebanese civil war and during Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon, his Amal fighters fought against advancing troops that reached the capital, Beirut. Its members later were a main player in setting up resistance against Israeli occupation forces that ended up with the Jewish state's withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000.\u003cbr/\u003e              Berri's rise is unusual because he does not come from an established Lebanese political dynasty. He was born in the African nation of Sierra Leone to a Lebanese trading family with origins in the south Lebanon town of Tibnin. \u003cbr/\u003e              Instead, he worked his own way up and is always proud to say that he ended four centuries of feudalism in southern Lebanon.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I insisted on leaving everything, although we were well off, and coming back to Lebanon,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Southern Lebanon at the time was deprived and political feudalism as in full control of southern Lebanon so I took the decision to resist this feudalism.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Berri studied law at the Lebanese University and after working as a lawyer, he met and became close to the spiritual leader of the Shiite community, the charismatic Iranian-born cleric Imam Moussa Sadr. \u003cbr/\u003e              Berri first came to national prominence in 1976 when he became an active member of the politburo of Amal, the military wing of a Shiite movement founded by Sadr, who for the first time mobilised Lebanon's long-marginalised Lebanese Shiites.\u003cbr/\u003e              For now, he has no plans to retire.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"There is no retirement in politics. As long as you serve your people and you can work, you will work.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Berri has three sons and six daughters from two marriages as well as 26 grandchildren. Unlike other politicians who have passed on the job to their children, he says he is opposed to handing down power.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We are an organised movement or party. Whoever succeeds me becomes the movement,\" Berri said referring to his Amal movement that he has led for almost four decades.\u003cbr/\u003e              Berri's record-breaking tenure as parliament speaker is partly rooted in Lebanon's sectarian-based political system which states that the parliament speaker must be a Shiite Muslim. \u003cbr/\u003e              It is difficult to find a consensual Shiite figure able to compete with Berri, whose local alliances, particularly with the powerful Hezbollah militia, ensures they invariably scoop up all 27 seats allotted for Shiites in the Lebanese parliament. \u003cbr/\u003e              According to the same decades-old pact, the Lebanese president must be a Maronite Christian and the Prime Minister a Muslim Sunni.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Beirut - 21 May 2018\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
