A boys and a girls team are now being selected to play at the Homeless World Cup in Mexico. ...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN\u003cbr/\u003e              Street children in Cairo are being encouraged to get involved in football thanks to a specially created league.\u003cbr/\u003e              A boys and a girls team are now being selected to play at the Homeless World Cup in Mexico.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE\u003cbr/\u003e              In Al Abageya, a popular area of Cairo in Egypt, a football pitch has been designated as a four-a-side street football hub. \u003cbr/\u003e              The initiative was started by NAFAS, an NGO using football to improve the livelihoods of people at risk of being on the street.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Three years ago they started a street football league and encouraged young people from around Cairo to participate. \u003cbr/\u003e              The game is slightly different from regular football and it has gained popularity since it was introduced here. \u003cbr/\u003e              The league is played every two weeks during two days. One day for men and one for women. \u003cbr/\u003e              Today local youngsters are playing football on one of the regular pitches in Al Abageya. \u003cbr/\u003e              Amongst them is Emad Abdel Aziz, a seventeen year old from Al Abageya. He's been playing here since he was six years old. \u003cbr/\u003e              Abdel Aziz and his friends have participated in local tournaments before but have not had the privilege of joining a club. \u003cbr/\u003e              His dream of becoming a football player is getting closer to reality thanks to this tournament. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"When we saw this pitch being made, Captain Karim was here at the time and he gave us the opportunity to participate in this league. We are now competing seriously and locals from Al Abageya like the concept and come here in a disciplined manner to play in this league.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              One outcome of this league is to select a team of boys and a team of girls to participate in the Homeless World Cup in Mexico in November.\u003cbr/\u003e              Abdel Aziz wants to impress the coach today with the hope he will be one of the selected players. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"I dream to be seen by the captain and selected to travel, that would be very good for me.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Coach Sobhy Saad Fahim watches the games closely and observes the players and Aziz is one of his main focuses. \u003cbr/\u003e              According to the coach, Aziz has potential and is keen to have a future with NAFAS after seeing others boys turn their lives around thanks to the programme. \u003cbr/\u003e              The second day is the girls' league - most of the participants are girls living in shelters or orphanages. \u003cbr/\u003e              Mona Rifaat is seventeen and she has spent her entire life in a girls' shelter, never knowing her parents. \u003cbr/\u003e              Her love of football started in the shelter.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Most of my siblings living in the shelter were playing football and we would play in many places,\" says Rifaat.\u003cbr/\u003e              Rifaat was close to being able to travel to Norway for last year's Homeless World Cup but her passport wasn't completed in time. \u003cbr/\u003e              This year she is very likely to join the team heading to Mexico.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"For now I want to join the team and to get good scores and play good matches over there. Then I want to work with them and help people just like Captain Sobhy and Captain Karim helped me,\" says Rifaat.\u003cbr/\u003e              Football plays an important role in her life and she has plans to stay in this field in the future.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Even if I work I want my job to be football related. I don't want anything outside of this domain,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e              Rifaat is the youngest player from her shelter but also one of the better players. \u003cbr/\u003e              Her involvement in the league has had other positive results.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We put the girls on the right track and encourage them to be somebody and to fight and pick themselves up. Some of them left school and we encouraged them to go back,\" says coach Fahim.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"This is one of the positive things that have happened to Mona this last year. Since last September, after having spoken with her, she has gone back to school.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              He adds that Rifaat has been successful in her studies.\u003cbr/\u003e              Basma Fouad lives in the same shelter as Rifaat. \u003cbr/\u003e              She has become a role model for others after going to Norway last year to participate in the Homeless World Cup.\u003cbr/\u003e              Since then she was given the opportunity to be more involved with NAFAS. \u003cbr/\u003e              Fouad now assists the coaches in the selection and organisation of the players. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Mona shines at the game. She should have travelled with us last time but she did not travel. She had issues with the paperwork and she couldn't travel. She is the best player and she understands the game well so that's why she is likely to be selected,\" Fouad says.\u003cbr/\u003e              The street football initiative has brought a lot of hope to the girls' shelter and has encouraged many to come and join the tournament. \u003cbr/\u003e              Of those who made it to Norway last year Coach Fahim says:\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Their lives had changed and they looked different. Those who smoked cigarettes or took drugs stopped doing so and got on the right path. So of course this can create some jealousy between them. Why did she travel and not me? At first they were not convinced. Basma would tell them about this new game and about Captain Sobhy and Captain Karim, they will make us travel. None of them could believe it. But when they saw the passports and the visas come and then some travelled to Norway, they sent photos from there, had a good time, played and came back very happy. Their lives had changed and they looked different. Those who smoked cigarettes or took drugs stopped doing so and got on the right path. They honestly felt there was hope and a door was opening for them in this place. In short this is why they call me Captain Sobhy who enables the girls to travel, since there are thirty new players from this shelter who are participating in our league with the hope of being selected to travel.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              39.
