Almost ten months after their defeat, hundreds of bodies of Islamic State group fighters continue to litter the western bank of the Tigris River.              ...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThe smell of death hangs in the air in the streets of Mosul. \u003cbr/\u003e              Almost ten months after their defeat, hundreds of bodies of Islamic State group fighters continue to litter the western bank of the Tigris River. \u003cbr/\u003e              With hardly a single building intact, the narrow streets of the Old City is a crumpled landscape of broken concrete and metal.\u003cbr/\u003e              Every acre is weighed down by more than 3,000 tons of rubble, much of it laced with explosives and unexploded ordnance.\u003cbr/\u003e              Major Saad Hussein, the head of Nineveh Civil Defence, said most of the bodies were of IS fighters, as well as some civilians who had been executed by IS. \u003cbr/\u003e              Mosul's Civil Defence, who have retrieved more than 2,600 civilian bodies, said they were previously told by the government to disregard the corpses of IS members.\u003cbr/\u003e              But public health worries and complaints from residents meant the government had to change its mind and use what limited resources it has to remove the bodies.\u003cbr/\u003e              Teams from Nineveh Civil Defence, Baghdad Civil Defence and the Nineveh Health Department have been combing the area for any human remains.\u003cbr/\u003e              They want to get as much work done as possible before the start of the month of Ramadan, when Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset.\u003cbr/\u003e              On Tuesday, they retrieved more than 150 bodies. \u003cbr/\u003e              Officers say they still find bodies of women and children in previous IS fighting locations and on the frontline.
