It is hoped the app will revolutionise the farming industry in Kenya, which has been steadily losing...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              A new phone app is helping farmers in Kenya to manage multiple farms and agricultural tasks remotely.\u003cbr/\u003e              It is hoped the app will revolutionise the farming industry in Kenya, which has been steadily losing its workforce due to a lack of interest from younger generations.  \u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE\u003cbr/\u003e              Shadrack Yoana, a 33 year old employee at a local government farm in Kitui, Kenya uses a tractor and casual labourers to prepare the land. \u003cbr/\u003e              But the part-time farmer has an ongoing challenge: accessing information to keep across the management of the farm. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"I am employed and also doing farming. I only rely on my casuals (workers) down there to give me information, which sometimes is misleading. I wish I could get a system or technology which I can rely on which can give me real-time information about my farming,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              Now a new app can help farmers track and manage conditions in their fields. \u003cbr/\u003e              The system uses sensors that relay the moisture, temperature and humidity levels as well as video and photo images to a central processing unit located in the farm. \u003cbr/\u003e              The unit then sends a message to the farmer, who can control irrigation, temperature and humidity regulators with a smartphone swipe. \u003cbr/\u003e              Richard Mwova installed the system on his farm. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Even when I am in the market, I can carry on my farm activities like irrigating using the phone to command the valves to open. It's a good technology and it has made me very happy,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              Aaron Mutua, inventor of the Farming App says the tech allows the farmer to work remotely. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"In this system, the moisture is sensed right from the farm and then the signal is conveyed to the system, and then depending on the levels, the system prompts the next course of action,\" explains Mutua. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"It is the next frontier in agriculture where you are supposed to do technology-based agriculture, where the farmer can access the farm without necessarily going to the farm,\" he adds.\u003cbr/\u003e              Inspired by a toy remote controlled car Mutua teamed up with software developer Nicholas Njue to create a application capable of sending and receiving information from a central processing unit in the farm. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"We have developed a solution to automate farming, and make it more friendly and enjoyable to the farmer by using ICT and Internet of things,\" says Njue. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"You can upload it online and be able to monitor it remotely, from wherever you are on planet Earth,\" he adds. \u003cbr/\u003e              The system has successfully been piloted and is awaiting an intellectual property certificate, then Mutua can bring it to market. \u003cbr/\u003e              It is expected to retail from as low as 35,000 Kenya shillings (around $350 US Dollars), with extra features available at a higher cost.\u003cbr/\u003e              Kenya's Ministry of Water and Irrigation has promised to adopt the technology in an attempt to boost food security in the country. \u003cbr/\u003e              Francis Nyambariga is Senior Assistant Director of Land Reclamation in the Ministry of Water and Irrigation. \u003cbr/\u003e              He says \"this technology will digitize farming\", adding that it will bring young people into farming and \"this will boost the food security in the country.\"\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Kitui, Kenya - 20 February 2018\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
