East German railway officials visited London in the mid 1960s and came back with the idea to build their own simulator to train drivers of the diesel-trains used at the time.
In 1988 it was moved to East Berlin where it was used to train the drivers of the city's commuter train service, the S-Bahn.
"It is really amazing that they had the technology back then to build something like this, with films rather than with 3D graphics that simulators use today," says Tobias Hirsch, one of the volunteers that is now working to maintain the simulator.
"And I think it is great that this technology from 1969 still works today."
In 1995, as the city was updating its trains, the simulator was finally taken out of service, and would have been deconstructed and thrown away if it wasn't for the final technician that worked with the simulator.
Lutz Tannigel, a teacher at the school for train drivers, had became the main person in charge of the simulator just the year before.
But he could not see the system being simply discarded.
