The government is still investigating how romaine lettuce from Yuma, Arizona, apparently became contaminated with E. coli bacteria.      ...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThe food poisoning outbreak linked to romaine lettuce has spread to three more states.\u003cbr/\u003e              The government is still investigating how romaine lettuce from Yuma, Arizona, apparently became contaminated with E. coli bacteria. \u003cbr/\u003e              As of Friday, at least 98 people in 22 states have gotten sick with the addition of Mississippi, Tennessee and Wisconsin, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.\u003cbr/\u003e              Growers in Yuma typically plant romaine lettuce between September and January. During the peak of the harvest season, which runs from mid-November until the beginning of April, the Yuma region supplies most of the romaine sold in the U.S. The outbreak came as the harvest of romaine was already near its end.\u003cbr/\u003e              At many restaurants around the country, romaine is still on the menu. Both family-run operations and big chains say they've checked with suppliers and are confident their romaine comes from places that aren't affected by E. coli. If they're not sure, they're replacing romaine with iceberg and other lettuce varieties.\u003cbr/\u003e              No deaths have been reported.\u003cbr/\u003e              The latest illness started on April 12, 2018.\u003cbr/\u003e              CDC's advice remains the same:\u003cbr/\u003e              • Do not eat or buy romaine lettuce unless you can confirm it is not from the Yuma, Arizona growing region. Restaurants and retailers should not serve or sell any romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region. Ask your suppliers about the source of their romaine lettuce.\u003cbr/\u003e              • If you do not know whether lettuce is romaine, do not eat it. This includes lettuce in a salad mix. Package labels often do not identify growing regions. CDC is advising consumers not to eat or buy romaine lettuce if they do not know where it was grown.\u003cbr/\u003e              • This advice includes whole heads and hearts of romaine, chopped romaine, and salads and salad mixes containing romaine lettuce. People get sick from Shiga toxin-producing E. coli an average of 3 to 4 days after swallowing the germ.
