The programme organisers hope to help the youngsters...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              A gymnastics programme is giving dozens of refugee children and teenagers the newfound confidence to tumble, flip and jump toward a brighter future.\u003cbr/\u003e              The programme organisers hope to help the youngsters avoid child labour and early marriage.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              Amid the tents and desert caravans of Zaatari Camp, it doesn't take long to spot the young faces at work.\u003cbr/\u003e              Many teenagers take up jobs to help support their families.\u003cbr/\u003e              But one programme is hoping to change that by offering an alternative activity.\u003cbr/\u003e              Makani, a space for refugee children's activity funded and run by UNICEF, hosts the only gymnastics programme in Zaatari camp.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"When children reach a certain age, thirteen, fourteen, that's when we see it's becoming increasingly challenging for kids to stay in school,\" explains Robert Jenkins, UNICEF Jordan representative.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"For girls, we see issues such as increasing child marriage rates. Also, there's concern about safety to and from school and enabling girls to access the school, just transportation. For boys, there is an increase in child labour rates amongst Syrian refugee children. We are seeing boys dropping out of school to supplement their household income.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Zaatari camp hosts more than 80,000 Syrian refugees.\u003cbr/\u003e              It is hard for them to see a way out of their situation and to be seen as anything other than a refugee.\u003cbr/\u003e              Activities like gymnastics offer refugee children a chance to reclaim their own identities. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"It's a really exciting programme. By enabling youth, well, children of all ages, actually, to have another focus, to express themselves physically, to see their sense of identity change to, 'I'm now a gymnast and I'm focusing on my gymnastics and I happen to be a refugee living in a refugee camp,' rather than the other way around,\" says Jenkins.\u003cbr/\u003e              The head trainer, 29-year-old Anwar Abu Jaish, is himself a Syrian refugee who grew up practicing gymnastics in the Emirates and in Damascus. \u003cbr/\u003e              While he suffers several muscle injuries that may prevent him from competing professionally again, Abu Jaish's dream is to see the Zaatari gymnasts on an Olympic stage one day.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"My dream is to send the children to the Olympics,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"My dream is to keep them away from the streets. My dream is to keep all bad things away from them. My dream is to give them a goal in life. My dream is that they won't be exposed to the things we were exposed to. My dream is for them to live in joy and happiness, and safety.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Teaching gymnastics has also given a renewed sense of purpose to the women's gymnastics coach, 20-year-old Asia Mussa. \u003cbr/\u003e              She is a university graduate who managed to complete her education and find work despite the challenges of displacement and cultural restrictions on women.\u003cbr/\u003e              Mussa encourages the young female gymnasts to resist pressures toward early marriage and fulfil their own ambitions, whether in gymnastics, studies or life beyond displacement.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"The goal that we want them to achieve is to finish her studies and realise her dreams, to stay away from early marriage and child labour, because they're still very young at this age, the age of 13 and 14, she's still a child until age 18. So she must complete her education and see what it is that she wants to do, to practice her hobbies and to develop her skills – of course this is after studying, and it shouldn't conflict with her education.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              UNICEF are calling on the international community to support them and the Jordanian government in keeping this programme going.\u003cbr/\u003e              Funding for refugee programmes in host countries like Jordan is at a low, even as refugee resettlement rates drop and the Syrian crisis escalates.\u003cbr/\u003e              UNICEF is currently less than 25 percent funded for 2018, with a funding gap of close to 150 US million dollars. \u003cbr/\u003e              If that gap is not closed, Jenkins said, vulnerable children like these gymnasts will lose the opportunity to chase their dreams.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Before I started coming to learn gymnastics, I was upset and pressured inside the caravans,\" says 12-year-old Hanin Shukri.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"But since I came here and learned gymnastics, and I made a lot of smart friends, and learned from them, and I started to learn how to do the different gymnastics moves.
