STORYLINE: ...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN\u003cbr/\u003e              Hundreds of people have celebrated Leonardo da Vinci's birthday in his birthplace of Vinci.\u003cbr/\u003e              The Italian town holds a party every year to honour the artist, engineer and architect.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              A celebration for Vinci's most revered son: Leonardo Da Vinci.\u003cbr/\u003e              The people of this Tuscan town gather every year to celebrate his birth, dubbed \"Giorno di Leonardo\" (Day of Leonardo).\u003cbr/\u003e              With guests dressed in Renaissance costumes, the party takes places beneath a sculpture of the Vitruvian Man, based on one of Leonardo's most famous drawings.\u003cbr/\u003e              His influence on Renaissance culture spanned the arts, engineering, science and even technology.\u003cbr/\u003e              Today, tourists can visit the house in the hamlet of Anchiano where one of Italy's most brilliant minds was born.\u003cbr/\u003e              Stefania Galletti is president of \"Pro Loco Vinci\", an association which promotes the town. It organised the celebrations.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"The Day of Leonardo is a big party dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci for his birthday. He was born on April 15th, 1452 here, in Vinci,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"People from Vinci wanted to celebrate this day which is very important all around the world because we know that Leonardo is famous worldwide, not only in Europe and Italy, and they want to celebrate this genius.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Every birthday party needs a birthday cake. \u003cbr/\u003e              And in the main square of Vinci, Piazza della Liberta, tourists and visitors have gathered for a slice of the action.\u003cbr/\u003e              An actor playing Leonardo cuts one of the many cakes made to honour the genius.\u003cbr/\u003e              Roberta Barsanti is director of Leonardo Museum and Leonardo Library in Vinci.\u003cbr/\u003e              She is well versed on the polymath's history.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"He (Leonardo) spent his childhood and his school days in the house of his paternal grandfather and was therefore educated at home where he was taught to read and write,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"When he was young, he joined his father in Florence but, since he was an illegitimate child, he wasn't entitled to follow his father's career as a notary. His father sent him to one of the most important studios at that time, Verrocchio's studio, where Leonardo had a top-level education in art but also in technology\".\u003cbr/\u003e              And despite the passing of almost 500 years since his death, she says his legacy lives on.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"His manuscripts continue to be an important and fundamental base for all those who want to have closer contact not only with art history, but also with the techniques and science of the Renaissance. They are almost a photograph of the subjects that were being discussed in that period of history, the technological challenges that the Renaissance engineers had to deal with.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Not only is he famous worldwide for his paintings, such as the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper, Leonardo was also a scientist, an engineer and an architect. \u003cbr/\u003e              A model of a tank based on his drawings is displayed in the museum, as well as flying machines designed long before the first aeroplane lifted off.\u003cbr/\u003e              These models have been reconstructed in accordance with Leonardo's manuscripts and drawings.\u003cbr/\u003e              Roberta Barsanti says his work is a reminder that humans must continue to discover and study.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Keeping the memory of Leonardo alive also means keeping alive the memory of one of the greatest geniuses of mankind. But at the same time it means never forgetting that the human mind has to work hard. The will to discover must always be kept alive, the curiosity for making progress should always remain a goal.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Every year since 1960, Vinci has been celebrating Leonardo by holding \"Lettura Vinciana\" (Reading about Vinci), where an expert has to present his studies and research on the artist. \u003cbr/\u003e              This year the main guest is Frank Fehrenbach, professor of Art History at the University of Hamburg, Germany.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Fehrenbach says that through Leonardo's works we can see someone who was in search of a new scientific and aesthetic language.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"The legacy of Leonardo is a tangible heritage: a few paintings, a lot of drawings and even more manuscripts. Why is he still important to us? Because through his manuscripts, his drawings and also his paintings, we see someone who is trying to develop a new scientific and aesthetic language\" he explains.\u003cbr/\u003e              Leonardo was also important for his research in underwater studies and in the museum there is a room where tourists can find a model of a diver.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Prof. Frank Fehrenbach says that Leonardo, even though he was tied to the culture of the Middle Ages, tried to develop his own style.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"His science has a lot of links with the science of the Late Middle Ages,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"But at the same time he's modern, in the sense that he at least tries to think in an innovative and autonomous way, not going by what he read but referring directly to his own personal experience,\" Fehrenbach adds.\u003cbr/\u003e              Leonardo da Vinci died on May 2nd, 1519, in Cloux (now Clos-Lucé), France.\u003cbr/\u003e              Today the \"Giorno di Leonardo\" is curated by the association \"Pro Loco Vinci\" and is sponsored, among others, by the Municipality of Vinci, the Municipality of Florence and the Tuscany Region.\u003cbr/\u003e              The first celebration was held in 1952, in order to mark the 500th anniversary of his birth, but the \"Giorno di Leonardo\" was organised for the first time in 1959; at the end of the 70s this event was suspended and re-established in 2017.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Vinci, Italy - 15 April 2018\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
