Animation of an exoplanet \u003cbr/\u003e              LEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, or TESS, is set to take off from Cape Canaveral next week (April 16 2018) in search of new worlds that aren't in our solar system. \u003cbr/\u003e              TESS will focus on finding \"exoplanets\" that orbit a star - similar to how the earth orbits the sun. \u003cbr/\u003e              The primary mission is to see whether these planets can support life. \u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              NASA is getting ready to launch its next planet hunter, TESS. It stands for Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite. \u003cbr/\u003e              The discoveries of this little spacecraft could change our understanding of faraway worlds. \u003cbr/\u003e              Engineers have diligently assembled and tested TESS since its arrival at Cape Canaveral in Florida. \u003cbr/\u003e              It will launch as early as April 16th to search for planets outside our solar system. \u003cbr/\u003e              Scientists with MIT (Massachusetts Insitute of Technology) and NASA are working on the mission.\u003cbr/\u003e              During a briefing, TESS Deputy Director of Science Sara Seager spoke about the mission's goals. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"It is going to survey nearly the entire sky looking at hundreds of thousands of stars up to millions of stars looking for new planets orbiting these other stars,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e              TESS will divide the sky into sections, looking at each slice for 27 days before switching to the next area. \u003cbr/\u003e              It will focus on exoplanets that orbit a star, similar to how the earth orbits the sun. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"When it is done we will have surveyed 85 percent of the sky for signs of exoplanets,\" says Padi Boyd, who is the Chief of the Exoplanets and Stellar Astrophysics with NASA.\u003cbr/\u003e              TESS will look for dips in the brightness of stars indicating planets passing in front of them. \u003cbr/\u003e              Astronomers are most interested in other planets that are similar to Earth in size and environment. \u003cbr/\u003e              A place that is not too hot and not too cold, so that water can exist on the surface.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We can do follow-up measurements such as getting the mass of the planet and looking at the atmosphere and searching for things like water vapour and even maybe signs of life on the planet,\" says Seager.\u003cbr/\u003e              TESS will be building on the mission of the Kepler space telescope which launched in 2009 but will soon run out of fuel.\u003cbr/\u003e              Kepler discovered about 2600 confirmed exoplanets - but far away\u003cbr/\u003e              TESS will spend about two years searching for new worlds closer to our solar system.  \u003cbr/\u003e              \"We want the brightest nearest stars to find planets around them and so they're bright enough that we can follow them up in more detail,\" says Seager.\u003cbr/\u003e              Future missions like the James Webb Space Telescope, set to launch in 2020,  will use Tess data to look closer at the planets discovered. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Tess is the mission that is going to detect some of those planets that we first dream of going to in a realistic way, \" says Boyd.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Scientists hope to one day send robots to those planets for further exploration.\u003cbr/\u003e
