The treaty covers up to 300 species of rosewood. \u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE: \u003cbr/\u003e              The guitar industry's frustration is focused on the United Nation's Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora or CITES. \u003cbr/\u003e              Tasked with combating wildlife smuggling, the agency has tangled in the past with instrument makers, mostly over trade restrictions on ivory, tortoiseshell and whale bone. \u003cbr/\u003e              The new regulations have ensnared companies that use relatively tiny amounts of the fragrant hardwood in the guitars, clarinets and oboes they make or sell. \u003cbr/\u003e              C.F. Martin and Co. of Nazareth, Pennsylvania gets most of its rosewood from sustainable plantations in India. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"China for instance, I think, it brings in almost two million cubic metres of rosewood per-year,\" says Frank Untermyer, the supply chain director.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"So, we use - and we're probably one of the biggest U.S. manufacturers using rosewood, acoustic guitar manufacturers in the country - and we use under 50 cubic metres.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              At the Gemwood lumberyard in Kochi, Kerala, India, workers prepare rosewood for use in guitars, pre-cutting guitar backs, sides and fingerboards for shipment. \u003cbr/\u003e              The company sources lumber from sustainable forests within the country.\u003cbr/\u003e              Martin and other guitar makers have complained about extensive delays in getting the necessary permits for importing rosewood and exporting products from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which saw applications double to 40,000 in 2017 mostly from rosewood. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"We have to segregate the wood that we bought in the U.S. versus the wood that we bought in Europe,\" explains Untermyer.\u003cbr/\u003e               \"And shipped the U.S. wood to countries outside of Europe and the wood that came from Europe back into Europe.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              In the first few months after the regulations took effect last year, acoustic guitar exports dropped about 28 percent and electric guitar exports declined 23 percent, according to the Music Trades magazine, an industry publication. \u003cbr/\u003e              Music retailers reported losing $60 million USD.\u003cbr/\u003e              The new regulations further required permits for products made from the wood, such as guitars, violins, bagpipes and xylophones. \u003cbr/\u003e              Companies - most of which had never needed permits before - had only three months to comply. \u003cbr/\u003e              John Bennett, an attorney representing musicians in New York, says the regulations have made travelling with instruments containing rosewood a worrisome process.  \u003cbr/\u003e              \"There have been instances where people have arrived (and) in good faith have tried to work with authorities,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"They've called authorities ahead and said; 'I'm coming, I think I have the right permits,' and then it turns out they don't. And their bow or violin has been confiscated. And, of course, those stories reverberate around the world.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Susanne Breitkopf, policy manager at non-profit the Environmental Investigation Agency has documented smuggling in several countries, including the shipment of 1.4 million illegal rosewood logs from Nigeria to China worth $300 million USD.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"She says Chinese demand is \"driving the illegal logging.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The United Nations says rosewood trade is the world's most costly wildlife crime with seizures totaling more than almost all other wildlife species combined. \u003cbr/\u003e              Between 2005 and 2015, 10,000 metric tons of rosewood was seized. \u003cbr/\u003e              Most wood was headed to China, where rosewood imports jumped 2,000 percent from 2005 to 2014, according to the conservation group Forest Trends. \u003cbr/\u003e              Much went into the production of Ming and Qing dynasty reproduction furniture, popular with affluent Chinese. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"China has taken some steps, for example, through seizing certain shipments and China has signaled that it is willing to implement the CITES convention,\" says Breitkopf.\u003cbr/\u003e              Environmentalists say it's too early to tell whether new regulations are impacting imports to China, which have continued to rise. \u003cbr/\u003e              Neither a spokesman for China's forest administration nor its furniture making association responded to repeated requests by email and phone by The Associated Press for comment on rosewood imports. \u003cbr/\u003e              Wu Wei a furniture designer at Thruwood Furniture in Beijing says rosewood is highly valued because of its durability. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"What Chinese value most for a piece is that it can be passed down for generations,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"And this is an important feature of rosewood furniture because the material is very hard and can be kept for a long time.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The attention to illegal rosewood has put guitar makers in a difficult spot. \u003cbr/\u003e              They find themselves defending a crackdown on illegal logging and highlighting their sustainability efforts while lobbying to exclude all trade in musical instruments from the regulations - a debate to take place when CITES meets in 2019. \u003cbr/\u003e              CITES officials say they're open to considering exemptions for certain types of musical instruments, but fear broad exemptions would let smugglers game the system.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Nazareth, Pennsylvania, US - 23 March 2018\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
