Under normal circumstances, mosquitoes produce equal numbers of male and female offsprings. But embedding the DNA of an endonuclease enzyme in the male mosquitoes shreds the X chromosome during sperm production, so that mostly males- over 95% as opposed to 50%- are reproduced. Tests conducted with wild female mosquitoes and genetically modified males showed that entire populations wiped themselves out within six generations as the number of females available for reproduction rapidly dwindle. \"We think our innovative approach is a huge step forward. For the very first time, we have been able to inhibit the production of female offspring in the laboratory, and this provides a new means to eliminate the disease,\" said study leader and Imperial College London professor Andrea Crisanti in an AFP report.
