The experiment is being led by a company called AltaRock Energy. A team of scientists and engineers began pumping 11 million gallons of water underground near the Newberry Volcano in October last year. The cold water is pumped 10,000 feet underground where it is heated up by geothermal energy. The steam is then extracted and used to spin turbines and generate electricity. This process is called \"enhanced geothermal engineering,\" or EGS. It is a special form of geothermal engineering that relies on manufactured rifts in the ground to produce clean energy. EGS is a new type of geothermal power technology that does not require natural geothermal resources such as reservoirs. With EGS, a geothermal reservoir can be created by pouring water into the hot rock deep underground to create new fractures or deepen existing ones. When the rising hot water and steam is trapped in permeable and porous rocks under a layer of impermeable rock, a geothermal reservoir is formed. If the experiment succeeds, scientists believe it could be replicated anywhere in the country and could generate up to 10 percent of America's energy. However, there are concerns over the safety of the technology as it has already led to more than 200 earthquakes in the region.\n
