Band members are frozen in time as they chant a song from their repertoire.
Sophie Triviere is the Cultural Service Department Manager at Grand Hornu Museum; she praises Abdessemed for delving into such a disturbing subject.
"Otchi Tchiornie is the title of one of the most passionate songs of this Red Army choir; (it means) 'Black Eyes' and black calls to mind carbon's dark colour," she says.
Abdessemed's solo exhibit at the Grand Hornu opened on 4 March and takes its name from the "Otchi Tchiornie" artwork. The show is inspired by the cruel power of recent news and is loaded with the artist's take on them.
Born in Algeria in 1971, Abdessemed is both revered and criticised for his hard-core, shocking approach to contemporary art.
He famously created a sculpture depicting French soccer player Zinedine Zidane as he headbutted Italy's Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup final.
In 1994, following the assassination of his art school director in Algiers, Abdessemed relocated to France where he went on to bewitch worldwide audiences.
In recent years he's entered the big league with exhibitions at the Venice Biennale, at Paris' Pompidou Centre, at Doha's Arab Museum of Modern Art as well as at galleries in New York and Tel Aviv.
Triviere says the artist takes events out of the shadow, eviscerates them to the core and puts them before the public, in full daylight.
