Since its 1993 Broadway run, the play has been performed around the world and was turned into an HBO miniseries.\u003cbr/\u003e              Set in a deeply divided United States haunted by premonitions of apocalypse, the play stars Andrew Garfield as Prior Walter, a gay man in 1985 who is suffering from AIDS and has visions from an angel that tells him he is a prophet.\u003cbr/\u003e              Speaking at the opening night after-party Sunday (25 MARCH) in New York, Garfield said Kushner's play is \"giving us a very accurate depiction of the hell we are in, and then he is giving us a way out, which is through community, empathy, remembering about the sacredness of life - all life - and the mystery of longing for more life.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The story is set against a political backdrop which is not that far away from what is happening in the U.S. today, according to the British actor.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We're in a time now, which is similar to the Reagan era. I would say it is a darker version of the Reagan era, what we are experiencing now with this current president and Republican control,\" Garfield said. \u003cbr/\u003e              While critical of the current administration, Garfield feels optimistic that the younger generation may be able to effect change. \u003cbr/\u003e              He cited Saturday's March for Our Lives in Washington DC, and around the country.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"These incredibly inspiring, beautiful young people organized the March for Our Lives, and if that doesn't tell you where we are, that you have teenagers who are wiser than the elders of our population, teenagers, who are wiser and smarter and who are being forced to fight for simply being alive,\" Garfield said.\u003cbr/\u003e              He added:  \"Thank god they are doing what they are doing, and we need to stand with them and follow them and help them lead.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Nathan Lane plays Roy Cohn, the real-life attorney that served as counsel under Sen. Joseph McCarthy during the investigations into Communism in the 1950s. \u003cbr/\u003e              Cohn is the play's villain. He tells people he has liver cancer instead of HIV, and when dying of AIDS scams trial patients out of the experimental drug AZT.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Lane sees a similarity between now and the time the play takes place.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"In the play he's talking about Reaganism, but look it's a lot of what he is saying applies to what we are going through now, and obviously there's the fact that Roy Cohn was the Dr. Frankenstein to the monster we know as Trump, but you know, really it's also about the human relationships, and it's about the inevitability and the need for change, and you know how difficult it is but making - as Harper in the play says,  'a kind of painful progress,' and you know then in the end he gives you some hope,\" Lane said. \u003cbr/\u003e              Kushner has said that his plays, and this one in particular, seem to thrive under Republican administrations. But the current Trump administration is like none that he has ever seen.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"There have been many bad Republican administrations. I would argue that, with the possible exception of some parts of the Eisenhower administration, it's all been pretty terrible. This is indescribably worse than anything we've had before, so maybe this is the moment when the play will really hit big,\" Kushner said.\u003cbr/\u003e              One of the key plot points of the play is when the angel tells Prior to deliver a message to humankind to stop progressing, so heaven can be restored, but Prior refuses because he feels without progress it's humanity that will perish.\u003cbr/\u003e              Kushner sees the struggles in the play similar to the current ones, especially under the Trump slogan, Make America Great Again.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I think it's the same issue, which is the fantasy that we can go backward to some past that exists only really in fantasy. I mean, that's a dangerous dream, and when one attempts that quintessence of political reaction, horrible things happen as a consequence.
