The bat house is part of a new exhibit opening Friday, and...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eIt's daylight outside, but with indoor lights simulating a full moon, hundreds of bats flap back and forth in the new night house at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans.\u003cbr/\u003e              The bat house is part of a new exhibit opening Friday, and the Associated Press got a preview on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"The nocturnal house is a nighttime building, so when you walk through, it's nighttime,\" said Joel Hamilton, the zoo's vice president and general curator. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"It's dark in there. The lights are down as if it's a moonlit night, if you may. And so there's a couple different species of bats.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The centerpiece of the $1.6 million night house is the 42-foot-long flight cage for 200 Seba's short-tailed bats - fruit-eating mammals with a foot-wide (30 centimeter) wingspan.\u003cbr/\u003e              The animals in the Criaturas de la Noche (Creatures of the Night) Bat House all are from Central and South America.\u003cbr/\u003e              The building's interior simulates an abandoned warehouse set up to protect Mayan artifacts during a dig.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"There's a variety of other smaller animals in there like dart frogs and cave roaches and tarantulas and, and then, probably the one that a lot of people are going to want to see is the vampire bats. So, we have vampire bats on exhibit in this building and also a smaller mammal called a ring-tailed cat, which looks kind of like a raccoon, or related to raccoons. It is a nice collection of animals that you would see in the tropical forest in the nighttime.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The exhibit includes a small colony of eight vampire bats living in one of a half-dozen exhibit cases set up as if a visitor was looking through a broken wall into the jungle. \u003cbr/\u003e              Their home is made to imitate a tropical ceiba-tree's buttress-like root with cup-like green lichen growing from it. \u003cbr/\u003e              During the preview, a half-dozen bats hung together from one such cup, forming a clump that could fit easily into one hand, while a seventh lapped cow's blood from a small bowl on the ground.\u003cbr/\u003e              Other cases hold giant cave cockroaches, reddish poison dart frogs with creamy white stripes, two kinds of tarantulas, and thumb-sized green tree frogs. At each end are two more elaborate displays, one for night owl monkeys and the other for a ring-tailed cat - actually related to raccoons.\u003cbr/\u003e              Outside about five alpaca can be seen roaming in a fenced exhibit space next to the bat house.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We were looking to have another species on exhibit here, just outside of the nocturnal house, so the alpacas represent one of the domesticated animals that you find in South America,\" Hamilton said. \"So, in total with what we're looking at here, this bat house itself was over a million dollars, but the entire expansion was over $3 million.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The new exhibits open to the public on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              New Orleans, Louisiana –  20 March 2018\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
