The \"Climate Neutral Living in Berlin\" project aims to demonstrate that small...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              A new project in Germany is challenging 100 Berlin households to cut their carbon footprint by forty percent in a year.\u003cbr/\u003e              The \"Climate Neutral Living in Berlin\" project aims to demonstrate that small changes to peoples' lifestyles can make a big impact on carbon emissions.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              Michael Gaedicke has a problem.\u003cbr/\u003e              He already commutes to work on a bicycle, he mostly eats vegetarian meals, and his entire electricity usage comes from solar power.\u003cbr/\u003e              But as a participant in the \"Climate Neutral Living in Berlin\" project he has ambitions to reduce his carbon footprint by forty percent in one year.\u003cbr/\u003e              Every Sunday, Gaedicke logs on to his \"Carbon Tracker\" - a web application on the project's website - and adds his latest data.\u003cbr/\u003e              The gas meter is checked, the shopping is added, and any travels are methodically calculated and added.\u003cbr/\u003e              The electricity supply for his home comes from a \"solar power community\" where people with solar-panels sell and share their electricity across the country.\u003cbr/\u003e              Gaedicke is even considering whether to change his transport options for his upcoming hiking trip to the Pyrenees.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Maybe we can take the train to the Pyrenees instead of flying,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"And just get there two days later compared to the fastest alternative. That's actually possible.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The \"Climate Neutral Living in Berlin\" programme is run by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.\u003cbr/\u003e              A hundred households in the German capital have calculated their yearly carbon footprint - the emissions of greenhouse gasses they're directly responsible for in their daily life.\u003cbr/\u003e              The challenge for each household taking part is to reduce this footprint by forty percent in one year.\u003cbr/\u003e              That forty percent figure is important. \u003cbr/\u003e              That's the amount of CO2 emissions Germany's government has committed the country to reduce by 2020, compared to 1990 levels.\u003cbr/\u003e              Unlike Gaedicke, who's on track to hit his goals, Germany is very unlikely to meet its targets, partly because of the country's reliance on coal-powered plants for electricity.\u003cbr/\u003e              The idea is to demonstrate how individuals can have an impact on the environment by changing their own habits, instead of waiting for political decisions, says the project's head Fritz Reusswig.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Climate protection is a communal task,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"That means that each and every one can do something. And we want to show that even with the current preconditions, people can actually take a few steps when they get engaged and start to take care.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Reducing electricity usage is a quick way to lower your carbon footprint, says Reusswig. But it's not the only way.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"They can also make a big difference with food and other consumption,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"For example, use stuff for longer, use less packaging, also consider how much meat they eat, maybe more vegetarian or vegan.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Staff at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research are on hand five days a week to help participants and answer questions\u003cbr/\u003e              Gaedicke is constantly looking for new ways to cut his carbon footprint. \u003cbr/\u003e              He sees climate change as an immediate danger to the world, one that everyone has to help combat.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"The limits of the world are finite,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We notice that now.
