The event, in its 11th year celebrates the achievement of African American Women in film. \u003cbr/\u003e              One of this year's honorees, Tessa Thompson (\"Selma\", \"Annihilation\") praised the film for shedding light on the box office power of black artists,  \"There's been an unfortunate perpetuation of a mythology inside of Hollywood, that black faces don't sell in a global space. And it's just not true.\" Thompson continued, \"And now with \"Black Panther\" and films like \"Get Out\", even the documentary \"Step\" I think we have had a tremendous year.\" \u003cbr/\u003e              Actor and film maker Justin Simien (\"Dear White People\") says the success of \"Black Panther\" didn't come as a surprise to the black community. \"We all have been waiting for everyone else to see that this is a thing that would happen, if you just support it. But it's great to see that other people are finally getting it.\" \u003cbr/\u003e              In less than 2 weeks, \"Black Panther\" has already cracked the top 20 of all time grossing U.S. films, bringing in $429 million as of Wednesday, 28 February. And it shows no sign of slowing down. The proximately African American cast stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan and Lupita N'Yongo. It's also directed (Ryan Coogler) and written (Coogler and Joe Robert Cole) by African Americans.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Actress and comedian Amanda Seales was more blunt when explaining what \"Black Panther\" means to the African American community.  \"We'd like it to mean, y'all can stop with the (Expletive). That's what we'd like it to mean. Because that's really what it's been. It's just been racist based B.S. saying that no one wants to hear about black stories. Because everybody knows that black popular culture is the most consumed culture worldwide AP. Everybody know that.\" Sales said, \"You can go to Russia and they know who Tupac (Shakur) is, come on now. So i'm actually glad there is a demonstrative numbers, quantitatively showing that this is real. And that's all the business cares about. So, let's do it.\"  \u003cbr/\u003e              For \"Get Out\" actor Lil Rel Howery, \"Black Panther\" represents one of several projects staring or being produced by African Americans in Hollywood,  \"There are so many films being shot now that will come out next year. There are TV shows. We coming with it. We're bringing the scripts. We're bringing the material. And now the proof is in the pudding, that we can make a lot of money from it.\" Howery's \"Get Out\" co-star Betty Gabriel is hoping for a day when studios don't have to be convinced to green light a project with a a black cast or director \"What I look forward to is more people of color being in positions of power. To make those decisions, so we don't have to go, 'Well I hope this works for us.' Ya know. We just know that will automatically be a decision made.\" Gabriel said.\u003cbr/\u003e              And that's what Thompson said is the next step, \"I hope it's an awakening for the folks that are the gate keepers. But I also think in terms of hollywood, the gate keepers just have to change.\"  \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Black Panther\" has grossed $704 million worldwide in two weeks.
