STORYLINE:              Rubbish...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Jerash camp in Jordan is getting dirtier after contracts for some sanitation workers were cut.\u003cbr/\u003e              The bin men have been laid off amid UNRWA budget problems.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              Rubbish collectors are out at Jerash camp in Jordan.\u003cbr/\u003e              They fling bags of waste into their truck as it edges through the narrow streets.\u003cbr/\u003e              But they don't have time to pick up every piece of litter they pass - they only take away rubbish that has been left out in bags.\u003cbr/\u003e              A rubbish crisis has festered because of budget cuts in the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).\u003cbr/\u003e              Its biggest donor, the United States, has not transferred all the money the organisation was expecting.\u003cbr/\u003e              So it has cut the contracts of some workers, including sanitation labourers.\u003cbr/\u003e              And now there are fewer people keeping this Palestinian refugee camp clean.\u003cbr/\u003e              Shop keeper Mahmoud Abu Lenyah points to the unsightly mess near his business.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It is a really big problem, this is a health problem,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"This is after cleaning. Every day we have to burn rubbish. There are old people and sick people who suffer from asthma and allergies.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Camp resident Abdul Hady Abo Taemah has resorted to cleaning his street himself.\u003cbr/\u003e              But he can't keep the camp of 29,000 people tidy on his own.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"The number of UNRWA workers must be increased. They used to work 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. There were two shifts,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"But now, how many of them are they? The number of workers is not enough compared to the size of the camp.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Jerash is known locally as Gaza camp and was established in 1968 for Palestinians who left Gaza following the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.\u003cbr/\u003e              It has grown from the 11,500 residents who first made their home here.\u003cbr/\u003e              New generations have been born in the camp, building businesses to support their families.\u003cbr/\u003e              But vegetable vendor Jalal Hassan Salah says the rubbish problem is putting a dent in his trade.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"No one goes to the market because there is rubbish. It is so bad for health. Of course it affects my business,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We arrive in the morning and we find in the market a pile of rubbish.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              And for the sanitation workers made redundant, the situation is also grim.\u003cbr/\u003e              One has found work at a chicken slaughterhouse - but with a huge loss in wages.\u003cbr/\u003e              Mahmoud Ali Al Jarrah says he used to earn 400 Jordanian dinars as a UNRWA worker but must now get by on just 150.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I have looked for a job so hard. I spent two weeks looking for a job. I could not find one in the camp nor in Jerash nor in Amman. I could not find one,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              UNRWA's money problems stem from US President Donald Trump's decision to suspend funding.\u003cbr/\u003e              He withheld 65 million US dollars of a 125 million payment due earlier this year.\u003cbr/\u003e              UNRWA officials say around 100 workers contracts have been cut as a result.\u003cbr/\u003e              And they still don't know what will happen with future funding.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"All that we are certain of is the 60 million US dollars that we have received from the US at the beginning of the year in January 2018. We do not have information about any future funding or support within the coming year,\" says Manal Sultan, UNRWA spokesperson in Jordan.\u003cbr/\u003e              The UNRWA assists 5.2 million Palestinian refugees in Syria, Lebanon, West Bank, Gaza and Jordan.\u003cbr/\u003e              Jordan hosts almost 2.2 million Palestinian refugees in 10 different camps.\u003cbr/\u003e              UNRWA runs 171 schools, 26 health centres and 4 mobile dental clinics in Jordan. Those facilities are operating normally and they are not affected by the US decision for the moment.
