STORYLINE:              On...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              A village in Egypt is using its rooftops for hydroponics farming.\u003cbr/\u003e              Al-Oun has cultivated a reputation as a leader in the method, which grows vegetables in tubes.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              On the rooftops of Al-Oun, an agricultural revolution is taking place.\u003cbr/\u003e              The villagers are growing vegetables using hydroponics systems.\u003cbr/\u003e              Onions, cabbages, radishes and a plethora of other produce are flourishing in these tubes - and without the need for chemical fertilisers.\u003cbr/\u003e              The village of around 250 households has high levels of unemployment and poverty, so this a welcome boost.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Rooftop farming has helped improve the village's economic state significantly and helped fight unemployment to a great extent,\" says Ragab Rabei, who was involved in starting the rooftop farms.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We decided to start a project that would save water and wouldn't be too expensive for farmers. Due to the shortage of lands and the difficulty of buying or renting them, rooftops of houses seemed like a good alternative that wouldn't cost farmers a lot of money.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Egypt is braced for water shortages when the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is constructed.\u003cbr/\u003e              But hydroponics uses much less water than traditional methods.\u003cbr/\u003e              For example, a lettuce crop requires 200 litres a month at these farms, but would consume 1,000 litres if grown conventionally. \u003cbr/\u003e              The crops are growing so well, the villagers are selling excess vegetables to other markets where they fetch a premium.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Because they're considered more healthy, their prices are different than the plants and vegetables that were planted using pesticides,\" explains Rabei. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Our products are now in high demand and we're incapable of meeting this high demand.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The villagers keep around 30 percent of what they grow and sell the rest on.\u003cbr/\u003e              The project has become so popular that 13 percent of the people here have rooftop farms and 20 percent have set up hydroponics systems on land outside their homes.\u003cbr/\u003e              Ali Ahmed is one of the people who has embraced the method.\u003cbr/\u003e              He tends to his plants carefully, they are an important food source for his household.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I stopped buying vegetables from the market and I supply my family with crops from my own production. I also sell them in other governorates,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"This farming method is not expensive at all, as one tube costs 30 Egyptian pounds (1.70 US dollars). We thought of the idea when we learned about the building of Al Nahda Dam (Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam). We decided to start a project that would save water and wouldn't be too expensive for farmers. Due to the shortage of lands and the difficulty of buying or renting them, rooftops of houses seemed like a good alternative that wouldn't cost farmers a lot of money. This is why we used the rooftops of houses for organic farming since it's an inexpensive method of farming that doesn't use (chemical) fertilisers, doesn't require effort and doesn't need soil. The method consists of a one metre stand, three metres in width and three levels high. One level consists of nine tubes, with a total of 27 tubes in one stand.
