They sometimes hop on trucks, the so-called \"kennels\" which are poorly...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eHundreds of people in Venezuela's capital gather every day at the Yaguara bus station to try to catch the few buses running, in order to get to work.\u003cbr/\u003e              They sometimes hop on trucks, the so-called \"kennels\" which are poorly equipped to transport passengers.\u003cbr/\u003e              The lack of public transportation as well as money to pay for such services make it difficult for many to get to work.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Along with four-digit inflation, widespread shortages and a recession deeper than the US Great Depression, Venezuela's economy is now being ravaged by a new scourge: mass absenteeism.\u003cbr/\u003e              In recent weeks, newspapers and social media have been filled with reports of work stoppages at the Caracas subway system or the state-run oil company as workers scraping by on meager paychecks can't be bothered to show up for work.\u003cbr/\u003e              Private companies complain they can't find enough workers to punch the clock, exacerbating a standstill in what few assembly lines are still running.\u003cbr/\u003e              The crisis is spiralling out of control even as President Nicolas Maduro seeks a second term in a snap election his supporters recently set for April 22.\u003cbr/\u003e              The move has drawn condemnation from the US and other countries who say he's flouting Venezuela's democratic tradition.\u003cbr/\u003e              Yet, Maduro has turned the economic crisis to his advantage, analysts say.\u003cbr/\u003e              In 2012, before the country sunk into recession, the country's minimum wage equalled 300 US dollars, on par with levels of other Latin American nations and enough to comfortably support a family with rent and food, according to Douglas Barrios, a Venezuelan economist at Harvard University.\u003cbr/\u003e              That has since dramatically changed.\u003cbr/\u003e              Normally, voters would turn their backs on a government under such dire economic circumstances.\u003cbr/\u003e              But Maduro is locking in support by making voters dependent on discounted government food bags and by announcing wage hikes before energised live audiences on nationally televised broadcasts.\u003cbr/\u003e              Socialist Venezuela's battle with absenteeism isn't new.\u003cbr/\u003e              The late Hugo Chavez in 2001 signed a decree that came to be known as the Law of Labor Immobility that makes it all but impossible for employers to fire a worker without their consent.\u003cbr/\u003e              But the problem has grown worse as the economy has unravelled and price distortions have become more pronounced.\u003cbr/\u003e              For many Venezuelans the choice is going to work for a few pennies a day or scavenging for the declining number of products sold at controlled prices and reselling them on the black market for several times their value.\u003cbr/\u003e              Companies struggling to stay in business have no choice but to remain flexible or find creative ways of operating.\u003cbr/\u003e              Some 300 people are employed at Danubio bakery, where they prepare pastries, cakes and lasagna on a daily basis.\u003cbr/\u003e              Many said the bus fare alone eats up their paychecks despite earning 30 percent more than minimum wage.\u003cbr/\u003e              But for many, the two meals a day they get at work make it worthwhile.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Coming to work is a kind of relief,\" said Andrew Kerese, who runs the successful family business with five bakeries across Caracas.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Here people have breakfast and lunch.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              However, many long-time employees have fled the country and called Kerese from abroad to tell him they're not returning.\u003cbr/\u003e              Others struggle getting to work because the buses are full or don't run, or they can't find spare parts for their cars.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Antonio Golindano's daily journey into work at the bakery starts at 4 a.m.\u003cbr/\u003e              The 71-year-old has tied on his apron and sifted flour there for four decades.\u003cbr/\u003e              But he said the hardships make it ever more difficult for him every day.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I do the impossible to come and fulfill my duty,\" he said. \"It is my obligation to come to work.\"\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Caracas - 6 February, 2018\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
