Deaths linked to opioids have quadrupled since 2000 to about 42,000 in...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              American doctors are turning to acupuncture in the battle to wean patients off opioids which were initially prescription driven.\u003cbr/\u003e              Deaths linked to opioids have quadrupled since 2000 to about 42,000 in 2016.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              David Ramsey says each prick of the needle gives him relief from chronic pain in his back and legs. \u003cbr/\u003e              He turned to acupuncture after becoming dependent on opioids after a bad fall. \u003cbr/\u003e              Ramsey says: \"I ended up on oxycontin, oxycodone and morphine to help deal with the pain.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Since starting acupuncture treatment, he's able for the first time to look forward to a life without pills.  \u003cbr/\u003e              \"What acupuncture does for me is it will, one it will decrease that level of pain. Two, it gives me a general sense of well-being,\" says Ramsey.\u003cbr/\u003e               About 64,000 Americans died in drug overdoses in 2016, an all-time record, and it's continuing to rise.  \u003cbr/\u003e              The medical profession believes the epidemic was triggered twenty years ago, when there was a sharp increase in the number of prescriptions for powerful pain killers.\u003cbr/\u003e              Now willing to research alternatives to drugs, doctors are turning to acupuncturists like Jared West who believe this ancient Chinese technique is a practical way to manage pain.  \u003cbr/\u003e              \"We need something other than opiates and acupuncture actually works,\" says West.\u003cbr/\u003e              Researchers say acupuncture appears to work by applying needles at just the right spot to restore the flow of mystical energy call Qi (pronounced 'chee') through the body, which spurs natural healing and pain relief. \u003cbr/\u003e              The cost of the opioid crisis is persuading a small but growing number of Medicaid programmes in US states to cover the cost of acupuncture for low-income patients, as an alternative to painkillers.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"There's a huge interest in people with chronic pain because there are so little options to treat it,\" says West.\u003cbr/\u003e              While research continues, insurance coverage keeps expanding.\u003cbr/\u003e              California, Massachusetts, Oregon and Rhode Island are some of the states that pay for acupuncture to treat pain for the poor and disabled.  \u003cbr/\u003e              In Ohio, the Medicaid program will start paying licensed acupuncturists as well as doctors. \u003cbr/\u003e              According to West: \"Having access to acupuncture, it really needs to be covered through insurance, for people in Medicaid to be able to get to it.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Armed forces veteran Harry Garcia is receiving what has become known as battlefield acupuncture.\u003cbr/\u003e              This is a relatively new acupuncture technique for fast pain relief. Single needles are applied to the ears and they can stay inserted for days. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"My walking gets better, able to tolerate the pain a lot more, so this is why I continue to do it month after month,\" said Garcia\u003cbr/\u003e              The Department of Veteran Affairs and Military Medical facilities like this one in Rhode Island have been at the forefront of using acupuncture as a substitute for opioids. \u003cbr/\u003e              A survey of military hospitals published last November found two-thirds of the facilities now provide acupuncture. \u003cbr/\u003e              Last autumn Veteran Affairs (VA) and other agencies announced they would be funding a dozen research projects to study the effectiveness of using non-drug approaches to treating chronic pain. \u003cbr/\u003e              Dr. Paul Pirraglia treats four veterans weekly. \u003cbr/\u003e              He says: \"Veterans have a lot more pain issues than the general population due to aspects of their service. So we were looking for something else to bring that was not pharmacologic.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Many medical experts still question how well acupuncture works. According to some doctors the quality of studies has been mixed.\u003cbr/\u003e              Dr. Ankit Maheshwari is clinical Assistant Professor of anesthesiology and pain management at Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine.\u003cbr/\u003e              He says: \"There may be a certain amount of placebo effect, that is part of the response to acupuncture.
