Wide of road, seen from bus\u003cbr/\u003e              LEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Self-driving vehicles are hitting the road at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games in South Korea. \u003cbr/\u003e              But it's already led to corporate sponsorship battles over what the vehicles can be called. \u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              At Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games, athletes and visitors can experience two futures of self-driving vehicles, in two different Olympic venues, by two different companies. \u003cbr/\u003e              In a reminder of a proxy war between automakers and tech companies over leadership of autonomous driving cars, South Korea's largest automaker and a local telecom firm have negotiated for months over who gets to claim the exclusive naming rights.\u003cbr/\u003e              In the end, they have agreed to call Hyundai Motor's car \"autonomous\" vehicle, while KT's self-driving buses are named \"connected\" vehicles.\u003cbr/\u003e              At stake in their sponsorship battle was whether the world should define self-driving vehicles as a form of transportation or a new kind of an internet-connected device like smartphones.   \u003cbr/\u003e              In Pyeongchang, Hyundai Motor Co., the local sponsor for the transport category, is operating five autonomous Nexo fuel-cell cars that navigate about seven kilometers (4 miles) from the Olympic stadium in the mountainous town without human control. \u003cbr/\u003e              For the world's fifth-largest auto group, the Olympics is a chance to dispel its image as a latecomer in the autonomous driving race and to undercut Japanese rivals that are preparing to roll out a fleet of self-driving cars at Tokyo's Olympics in two years.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"In this latest demonstration, we have improved lane changes and overtaking functions compared to previous tests,\" says Kim Byoung Kwang, senior research engineer at Intelligent Safety Research Team of Hyundai. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"And we also demonstrated key technologies, including tollgate passing, driving junctions, interchanges and tunnel driving with enhanced judgment and control capability even in more complex driving environment.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Hyundai put its autonomous driving Nexo fuel-cell cars on 190-kilometer (118 miles) highways from Seoul to Pyeongchang in a one-time test before the opening ceremony. \u003cbr/\u003e              Without relying on human judgment or interruptions, Nexo passed tollgates and drove junctions and tunnels. \u003cbr/\u003e              For what was the country's first test drive of self-driving cars on highways, South Korea's government has prepared for years and developed 3D maps.\u003cbr/\u003e              Hyundai has announced a partnership with U.S.-based self-driving technology startup Aurora Innovation. The two are expected to announce a self-driving taxi or ride-hailing services by 2021. \u003cbr/\u003e              In the seaside town of Gangneung, where Olympic ice hockey and skating matches are underway, KT Corp., the local sponsor for wireless networks, is showing how self-driving cars will be the new data-guzzling devices of the future.  \u003cbr/\u003e              The 5G connected bus in Gangneung's Green City has been turned into a giant moving smartphone. \u003cbr/\u003e              The windows turn into a screen where passengers can watch movies. They can also display fictional landscapes, instead of showing the view outside the bus. \u003cbr/\u003e              To emphasize the importance of handling an enormous amount of data without hiccups to operate such connected vehicles, KT has built the 5G networks in the Olympic towns.\u003cbr/\u003e              The bus is one example of 5G services. \u003cbr/\u003e              Self-driving cars will consume and analyze enormous amount of data as sensors and chips will read road conditions and analyze them in real-time to make judgments and detect any danger. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"KT has come up with lots of 5G services for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics,\" says Cha Daehyun, senior research engineer at KT Research and Development Center.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"The autonomously-driving connected car, for example, is perceived as a new communications device in the 5G era. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"We believe factors such as latency and traffic transmission of large files are key factors of autonomous-driving cars.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The 5G network, which is expected to be deployed around the world in 2020, is at least 80 times faster than the current fourth-generation of the wireless networks and let users download a feature-length movie in a matter of a couple of seconds. \u003cbr/\u003e              KT is showing off 5G phones, virtual reality and other services based on 5G at its booths in Gangneung and Seoul, including the connected bus. \u003cbr/\u003e              The company plans to begin a 5G service in South Korea in 2019.
