The president of Rome's...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThe Jewish Community of Rome gathered outside the Polish embassy on Thursday to protest against legislation that outlaws blaming Poland as a nation for Holocaust crimes committed by Nazi Germany.\u003cbr/\u003e              The president of Rome's Jewish community handed a letter to the charge d'affaires explaining the reason for the peaceful protest while demonstrators waved Israeli flags, and held banners condemning the Polish bill, which they claimed \"denies a historical reality\".\u003cbr/\u003e              The decision by Poland's president to sign the controversial legislation on Tuesday caused an outcry from Jewish communities around the world and defied criticism from Israel and the United States. \u003cbr/\u003e              But in a move that appeared to be designed to soften the impact of his decision, Polish President Andrzej Duda said he would also ask Poland's constitutional court to evaluate the bill - leaving open the possibility it could be amended.\u003cbr/\u003e              The legislation calls for prison terms of up to three years for falsely attributing the crimes of Nazi Germany to Poland. \u003cbr/\u003e              The law takes effect 14 days after it's officially published, but it wasn't immediately clear when that would happen.\u003cbr/\u003e              Poland's authorities have described it as an attempt to protect the country's reputation from what it believes is confusion about who bears responsibility for Auschwitz and other death camps Nazi Germany set up in occupied Poland. \u003cbr/\u003e              They say it was modelled on anti-defamation laws in many other countries, including laws criminalising Holocaust denial.\u003cbr/\u003e              The proposed law has fuelled a diplomatic crisis with Israel, which fears it would stifle discussion about the Holocaust and enable Poland to whitewash the role of the Poles who killed or denounced Jews during the German occupation of Poland during World War II.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Rome - 8 January 2018 \u003cbr/\u003e              1.
