The Sudanese army carried out a...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eSudan has bolstered its troops along the border with neighbouring Eritrea, in the latest escalation among the Nile basin countries over Ethiopia's massive dam construction project. \u003cbr/\u003e              The Sudanese army carried out a large-scale mobilisation of its forces in the eastern border area near the city of Kassala on Wednesday, after widespread reports for over a month suggested that Eritrean troops were amassing on their side of the border.\u003cbr/\u003e              Sudan officially closed its border with Eritrea late last month. \u003cbr/\u003e              Ethiopia says the 5 billion US dollars dam is essential for its economic development, noting that the vast majority of its 95 million people lack electricity. \u003cbr/\u003e              The dam's hydroelectric plant will generate over 6,400 megawatts, a massive boost to the country's current production of 4,000 Megawatts.\u003cbr/\u003e              Differences over the Ethiopian dam, is potentially destabilizing and could add a new and dangerous layer to the turmoil already ravaging the region. \u003cbr/\u003e              Egypt fears the dam in Ethiopia could cut into its share of the river, which provides nearly all its freshwater. \u003cbr/\u003e              Eritrea and Ethiopia have long been bitter rivals and went to war in the late 1990s. \u003cbr/\u003e              Ethiopia denies it is cutting into Egypt's share of the Nile, and has accused Eritrea of training rebels to carry out sabotage attacks on the dam.\u003cbr/\u003e              Egypt's relations with Sudan, which has lent support to Ethiopia in the Nile dispute, have meanwhile deteriorated.\u003cbr/\u003e              Ethiopia says its dam would have no negative impact on Egypt or Sudan, and argues it is vital for its development.\u003cbr/\u003e              Sudan is believed to be moving closer to Ethiopia, perhaps hoping to secure cheap electricity from the new hydroelectric project.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Kassala, near Eritrean border - 31 January 2018\u003cbr/\u003e              ++QUALITY AS INCOMING++\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
