The Mexican painter is renown for her self-portraits and bold artworks depicting events from her life and home...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEAD IN:\u003cbr/\u003e              A new exhibition dedicated to Frida Kahlo opens in Milan tomorrow (1st February 2018).\u003cbr/\u003e              The Mexican painter is renown for her self-portraits and bold artworks depicting events from her life and home country. \u003cbr/\u003e              \u003cbr/\u003e              STORY-LINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              The title of the new exhibition at the MUDEC museum in Milan sums up the aims of the curator..\"Frida Kahlo, Beyond the Myth\" \u003cbr/\u003e              \"This is what the exhibit wants to shed light on: Frida Kahlo as an artist – so for once we try to set aside the figure of Frida Kahlo as a woman and as the wife of Diego Rivera to narrate her role as a precursor in terms of style and in her choice of themes in art history \" explains curator, Diego Sileo.\u003cbr/\u003e              Many self-portraits depict her conscious search of the ego, but other themes like resilience and vital suffering are also very present in pieces like The Broken Column, 1944 or Henry Ford hospital, 1932, in which she depicts herself while having a miscarriage: the bed is covered in blood but the viewer's eye can easily go to her tear shedding down her cheek.\u003cbr/\u003e              Sileo has been working on this exhibit for the past six years. In 2007 he gained access to the archive found in Casa Azul, home of the artist in Mexico City.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"In order to explain and have the visitor understand the themes and new elements shown we often associated photographs, drawings and documents to her works, which can become extra tools for the understanding of the painting,\" explains Sileo.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I was often able to find material, for the most part on display for the first time that can portray her relationship with the artwork - indeed the relationships present with photographs, drawings and letters are the most interesting academically and scientifically in Frida Kahlo's artwork.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Her home country, Mexico is prominent throughout the exhibition.\u003cbr/\u003e              For her it wasn't just her country but it was her natural environment, that's why a big section of the exhibit is dedicated to this relationship not only organically, with still life paintings, but also with the context and society of Mexico, with portraits of Mexican people that surrounded her, friends, colleagues, family members, patrons because this was also a way for her to tell people about her Mexico,\" explains Sileo.\u003cbr/\u003e              A secondary exhibit, \"Dreaming with the ancestors, Mexican Archaeology in Frida Kahlo's Art and Life\", illustrates how both the indigenous world and the pre-Columbian past were paramount in Kahlo's own artistic vision. \u003cbr/\u003e              On display are archaeological and ethnographic Mexican objects from the MUDEC permanent collection and historical photos next to images of Frida Kahlo's work.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"What you see here is terracotta statue from western Mexico, a region from which a large part of Frida Kahlo's collection of ceramics originates and in this case we displayed it in front of a picture of Frida Kahlo in which she is holding a statue from western Mexico. It is a great example of the work we tried to put together – to connect objects with historical pictures that bear witness to these objects.
