Participants are taught military style discipline in a bid to end gang violence and help...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN\u003cbr/\u003e              A resocialisation programme in Ivory Coast is helping to put young offenders back on the right path in life.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Participants are taught military style discipline in a bid to end gang violence and help offenders get clean of drugs. \u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              Residents of poorer neighbourhoods in Ivory Coast's largest city Abidjan have over recent years suffered from violent street crime carried out by gangs composed of children as young as twelve.\u003cbr/\u003e              The tabloid press has reported on cases of machete and knife wielding youths robbing, maiming and even killing those unlucky enough to be in their way.\u003cbr/\u003e              The gang members are locally known by the dehumanising term of \"microbes\" - the French word for germs. \u003cbr/\u003e              Often not attending school, the children are easy prey for adults looking to use them to commit crimes.\u003cbr/\u003e              President Alassane Ouattara's government has described the \"microbes\" as children traumatised by Ivory Coast's post-election crisis of 2010-11, which claimed more than 3,000 lives after ex-President Laurent Gbagbo refused to accept defeat. \u003cbr/\u003e              While fear persists, locals say in many areas the crime phenomenon has subsided over recent months.\u003cbr/\u003e              Observers say that's thanks in part to a boot camp style programme for youth offenders.\u003cbr/\u003e              Popular outcry at the violence prompted the government to take action, rounding up gang members and packing them off to a six month 'resocialisation' course.\u003cbr/\u003e              In a high-walled enclosure topped by barbed wire some 300 kilometres to the north of Abidjan, the youths are given a chance to redeem themselves in society's eyes. \u003cbr/\u003e              At the Ouokoukro Resocialisation Centre, set up by the national security council, young offenders get clean of drugs and are taught military style discipline.\u003cbr/\u003e              Manignan Ouattara is the resocialisation programme's coordinator.\u003cbr/\u003e              The offenders also have the opportunity to learn trades that should help them re-enter society with useful skills that employers are looking for. \u003cbr/\u003e              Programmes on offer include tailoring, car mechanics, metal work, building and electrical skills. \u003cbr/\u003e              According to Ouattara, some 774 youths have passed through the programme in half a dozen batches since its inception in late 2016. \u003cbr/\u003e              They play sports and learn about civic mindedness, human rights as well as receiving schooling in the basics: reading and writing and arithmetic for those who missed out earlier in life.\u003cbr/\u003e              The camp's psychologist, Didier Kouame N'Guessan says the experience here should help the participants change their lives for the better.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Everyone has really done their best, the specialist teachers, the police, everyone helping including myself, a psychologist, with all the therapeutic advice which we have here. If the children use all this, they can improve, become normally behaved. The memory of being a 'child microbe' will fade.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              At the end of the resocialisation programme, parents wait anxiously at the camp gate for their children.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I have come to get my child.  He came to this centre. It's not that he is headstrong, nor does he steal,\" says one mother Djedje Traore. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"We sent him here for correction, so that he becomes wiser,\" she adds. \u003cbr/\u003e              The 110 attendees waiting for buses back to the big city are the last group at the camp for the time being. \u003cbr/\u003e              One camp graduate, Amadou Dialo says: \"I've learnt a lot of things that you need to do in life, and that you shouldn't. During my stay here, I really learnt a lot of things.
