What we don't know is what specific aspects of city living are causing this increasing risk and to what extent is it the built environment, to what extent is it the social environment and perhaps there is an interaction between the two, so the aim of this study is to understand what are the underlying mechanisms, what are the specific aspects of the urban environment which causes some people to develop mental health issues."
What Mechelli and his team hope to be able to do in the future is pinpoint specifically what particular things about living in a city puts people under greater mental duress.
It could be anything from the architecture, to the transport systems, or the general pressure cooker environments of cities.
Not only that but according to Mechelli, the bigger the city, the greater the risk.
He says: "We know that this association between living in the city and developing mental health issues is a causal association. And the reason we know this is (because) there have been studies where people were literally taken out of an urban environment into a rural environment and their symptoms would improve and we also see that the greater the city, the greater the risk. So there is a positive correlation between risk and urbanicity."
The pilot study was to prepare for a clinical trial involving people who are assessed by doctors to be at risk of mental health, suffering severe anxiety for example.
According to Mechelli the new technology means doctors can track patients thoughts and emotions and correlate this data with what they are doing and where they are doing it.
Mechelli says: "Now with smartphone technologies it's possible to get apps that literally monitor people as they go about their daily life, so in the case of Urban Mind which is this app that we've developed people hear prompts at random times throughout the day and when they hear these prompts they have to answer questions about their surrounding environment, for example, can you hear birds? Can you see a tree? Is it noisy? And also questions about how they feel. People tell us how they feel throughout the day multiple times and this gives us a much more accurate measurement."
Scientists at Kings College London are hoping that when they have a fuller understanding of how outdoor spaces affect our wellbeing and actually benefit us, they will be able to tailor better therapies and treatments to address mental illnesses.
Mechelli says: "From this pilot study which was carried out in healthy people we think that those who are already experiencing health issues would benefit from the increase in mental wellbeing that comes from exposure from exposure to nature. How much of a difference is it going to make? This is at present an open question, but we are about to launch a clinical trial where people who are at very high clinical risk of becoming mentally ill, or those who have already become ill, will use the app and we will be able to monitor them on a day to day basis. And then we will be able to quantify its effect and this is really important because intuitively we all think that nature is good for us, but the actual evidence base that can be used to inform the decision making in urban planning, design is actually very limited."
Artist Michael Smythe was also part of the team designing Urban Mind.
He says it can also be used to help communities find out more about their environment:"I'm very interested in how people interact in those environments and how we can then adjust these sort of ecosystems to make it healthier for people to pass through, or live near. That's what I do in my practice. On a practical level there are a few stages to the process.
