The Hong Kong-based startup Hanson Robotics has joined forces with experts at the...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              The humanoid robot Sophia is taking her first steps thanks to a new partnership with a university robotics lab.\u003cbr/\u003e              The Hong Kong-based startup Hanson Robotics has joined forces with experts at the University of Las Vegas to give walking legs to the talkative droid.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              One small step for Sophia, one giant leap for AI.\u003cbr/\u003e              In the workplace of the Drones and Autonomous Systems Lab (DASL) at the University of Las Vegas, Sophia is taking her first ever steps.\u003cbr/\u003e              Gingerly, she shuffles along watched closely by her creator, Hanson Robotics founder and CEO David Hanson.\u003cbr/\u003e              The addition of legs to the lifelike bot is another stage in pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence for Hanson and his team.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We're really aspiring for Sophia to help people in medical applications, therapy, medical assistance and by giving her a body then that means that Sophia can help to learn to work with us in factories and help us around the home,\" says Hanson. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Eventually, we expect that she will be truly alive and with us in our world helping people on a daily basis.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Experts from the University of Las Vegas created DRC-HUBO, a walking robot that won the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) in 2015, beating 22 competitors from five different countries.\u003cbr/\u003e              That expertise is now being applied to Sophia's evolving mobility. Hanson Robotics is also partnering with South Korea based Rainbow Robotics to make Sophia mobile.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"So currently, with mechanical engineering practices, it's kind of rigid, which means a if robot falls, we have to calculate how to yield and it's very easy for robots to break and how to respond when walking that's very complicated too,\" says Hanson.\u003cbr/\u003e              Sophia first debuted in March 2016.\u003cbr/\u003e              A multinational team of scientists and engineers are fine tuning her appearance and the algorithms that enable her to smile, blink and refine her understanding and communication.\u003cbr/\u003e              Her skin is made of a nanotech material that Hanson invented and dubbed \"Frubber,\" short for flesh-rubber, that has a flesh-like bouncy texture mimicking human skin. \u003cbr/\u003e              Cameras in her eyes and a 3D sensor in her chest help her \"see.\" \u003cbr/\u003e              The processor that serves as her brain combines facial and speech recognition, natural language processing, speech synthesis and a motion control system.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Our AI team is really aspiring to use Sofia as a platform for achieving human-level general intelligence, that's creativity, the ability to dream and imagine, the ability to have compassion,\" says Hanson. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"And that's another way that the physical body is really important. So, the nature of humans is we've had a few billion years to get it right and we then can use these kind of springy muscles, we're naturally compliant or springy yielding. And so if we fall, then we roll, we bounce, and this kind of thing. We have our very natural calculation process in our computing how to walk and run and respond to the ground. But robots all that has to be built from scratch. And so currently, with mechanical engineering practices, it's kind of rigid, which means if a robot falls, we have to calculate how to yield and it's very easy for robots to break and how to respond when walking that's very complicated too. So, it's kind of amazing that just in the past 30 years or so, robot engineers have been able to get robots like the DARPA Robotics Challenge HUBA to be able to walk over a variety of terrain, to be able to bounce and run, that's a remarkable accomplishment.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              8.
