STORY-LINE:             ...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEAD IN:\u003cbr/\u003e              The Arab world's first gay radio station has launched in Tunisia.\u003cbr/\u003e              But staff at Shams Rad say they fear for their safety after receiving death threats.\u003cbr/\u003e              \u003cbr/\u003e              STORY-LINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              The rainbow flags are a clue to this radio station's ideology.\u003cbr/\u003e              Shams Rad has been set up to defend the rights of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community.\u003cbr/\u003e              But launching a service like this is considered risky in Tunisia.\u003cbr/\u003e              It is the first gay radio station in the Arab world and as such has triggered an outcry in this conservative society.\u003cbr/\u003e              Members of staff have been targeted by its critics and the station's general manager, Boulhedi Bouhdid , has asked to state to provide protection.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"The vice president of Shams Rad became the main subject of the Friday prayer in his motherland, Monastir, which contained a direct death threat. Even his family was threatened,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Personally, I have received 4,300 messages to my Facebook account which contain violence and death threats.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The radio station is funded by the Netherlands Embassy in Tunisia and was launched on 18 December.\u003cbr/\u003e              Its aim is to provide an alternative voice in a country where LGBT minorities are at best ignored and at worst attacked.\u003cbr/\u003e              The station wants to combat behaviour such as hate letters and calls for violence against gay people which are sometimes found on social networks.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"The creation of Shams Rad is the only solution to defend the minority groups (LGBTQ) and let them express themselves in the media. Tunisian TV channels always bring on Islamic personalities to say that homosexuals are forbidden in Islam,\" explains Mounir Baatour, a lawyer and president of Shams Association.\u003cbr/\u003e              Sexual acts between consenting adults of the same gender are illegal in Tunisia.\u003cbr/\u003e              But earlier this year the government repealed a law which enforced anal examinations on men suspected of being gay.\u003cbr/\u003e              But many Tunisians are still against homosexuality and don't approve of the radio station.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I'm against the creation of Shams Rad because its principles are forbidden in Islam and are against the Tunisian tradition and society,\" says Esra Arwa, an active member in the civil society.\u003cbr/\u003e              Shams Rad does not just face threats against staff - it lacks funding as companies are not prepared to advertise on its programmes.\u003cbr/\u003e              The Association of Imams in Tunisia has tried to stop the transmission of Shams Rad.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Tunis - 18 December 2017\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
