Galarreta leaving news conference   \u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE: \u003cbr/\u003e              Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski faces turbulent weeks ahead despite dodging impeachment over his ties to the Brazilian construction giant implicated in Latin America’s biggest corruption scandal. \u003cbr/\u003e              Legislators came eight votes short of impeaching the president on Thursday night following a half-day of impassioned debate. Applause erupted inside Congress and his supporters cheered and waved Peruvian flags outside as it became clear Kuczynski would remain president. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Tomorrow a new chapter in our history begins: the reconciliation and reconstruction of our country,\" Kuczynski tweeted afterward. \u003cbr/\u003e              The impeachment attempt left Kuczynski weakened but also revealed divisions inside the opposition Popular Force party, which dominates Congress but saw even its leader’s brother, lawmaker Kenji Fujimori, abstain from voting for impeachment. The abstention was in apparent defiance of Popular Force leader Keiko Fujimori - both siblings are children of jailed former president Alberto Fujimori. \u003cbr/\u003e              While Keiko, 42, has tried to drive a conservative political agenda, Kenji has maintained amicable relations with Kuczynski and other opponents, and focused on freeing his father from prison. \u003cbr/\u003e              Without providing evidence, some lawmakers said Kuczynski had won support in Congress by agreeing to free Alberto Fujimori, a charge the president and his supporters denied. Kuczynski has said he is evaluating Fujimori’s sentence based on factors including the former president’s health. \u003cbr/\u003e              Aside from a decision on Fujimori, Kuczynski faces a debilitating ongoing criminal investigation into his involvement with Odebrecht, potentially opening another chapter in the bribery scandal that has ended the careers of some of Latin America's most prominent politicians. The company admitted in a 2016 U.S. Justice Department agreement to paying nearly $800 million in kickbacks to politicians, their campaigns and political parties to secure lucrative public works contracts. \u003cbr/\u003e              Kuczynski is due for questioning at the chief prosecutor's office next week. \u003cbr/\u003e              In Ecuador, Vice President Jorge Glas has been sentenced to six years in prison for orchestrating an Odebrecht bribery scheme. Former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is appealing his conviction on charges of corruption and money laundering related to the plot. In Peru, two former presidents stand accused of accepting money from Odebrecht. One is behind bars and the other in the U.S. seeking to avoid extradition. \u003cbr/\u003e              Kuczynski came under fire after an opposition-led investigative committee revealed documents last week showing Odebrecht made $782,000 in payments to his private consulting firm more than a decade ago. Some of the payments overlapped with years that Kuczynski spent as a high-ranking government minister. \u003cbr/\u003e              During his 30-minute testimony on Thursday, Kuczynski showed the contracts in question on an overhead screen, pointing out that none contained his signature. He said he had no knowledge of the payments and that he never favoured any company while in office. He characterized the transactions as part of a legal contract between two private companies and said his opponents were trying to force him from power without due process. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"I am here to look you in the eye, and tell you that I am not corrupt and I have not lied,\" he said, speaking slowly and assertively. \u003cbr/\u003e              The vote capped a tumultuous eight taking office and that, at the very least, as a high-ranking government minister when the money was paid he should have done a better job to shield himself from potential conflicts of interest.
