When it comes to winter travel destinations, adventurous Asian tourists are looking further north, to snow-covered Lapland.\u003cbr/\u003e              According to the Finnish arctic area's marketing board, visitors from China and Singapore doubled last year and even greater numbers are expected this season.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              It's a winter wonderland at Santa Claus Village, around eight kilometres (five miles) north of Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland.\u003cbr/\u003e              Over 300,000 tourists, from as far and wide as Australia, China and the U.S. visit the attraction every year to enjoy the snow and get in the festive spirit. \u003cbr/\u003e              There are reindeer rides with Rudolph and his pals, and fast-paced husky sleds.\u003cbr/\u003e              And while temperatures plummet, tourism is on the up in the northerly region.\u003cbr/\u003e              According to Lapland's marketing board, in 2016, 2.66 million visitors registered overnight stays, a 13 percent increase on the previous year.\u003cbr/\u003e              While nearby countries, such as the U.K., Germany and France led the market, the real growth area is Asia.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"People here are very friendly,\" says Katrina So from Hong Kong, visiting Lapland for her honeymoon with husband Alex.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"And the atmosphere is quite different s well. Hong Kong is very busy, and it's relaxed and it's like holiday, everywhere,\" says Alex.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Most recently we've been going to all the cities, right? So, we've been looking more towards the countryside,\" says Precha Chai Sing from Singapore.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"More exotic and adventurous,\" says Pippop, Precha's brother.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We want to catch the Aurora,\" says Shantel Lee from Singapore.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"And see Santa,\" adds her sister Shannon.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We love the weather here, because Singapore is a very, very hot country,\" says mother Agnes.\u003cbr/\u003e              During 2016, overnight stays from China rose to almost 35,000, a nearly 100 percent increase. Similarly, numbers from Singapore shot to over 23,000, a 108 percent jump.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Last season alone, we did witness 100 percent growth of our Chinese market and then also the overnights from Singapore,\" says Sanna Tarssanen from House of Lapland.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Well, there are big numbers from the other Asian markets as well, but those are the big ones. So, the market size did double last season alone.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              That's good news for Finnish Lapland, which employs about 4,400 people in its winter-focused tourism industry.\u003cbr/\u003e              A falling rouble and troubled economy had led to a steep decline in visitors from Russia - one of Finland's key travel markets - but a rise in tourists from Asia banished those winter blues.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Somehow it opened totally a new market, totally new window to the tourism season,\" says Sanna Karkkainen from Visit Rovaniemi.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"So, we used to have a peak season for Russian travellers during the Christmas and Russian New Year and once it was kind of declining really heavily, we had a big rush for Asian travellers and we noticed that the gap was filled so quickly.\" \u003cbr/\u003e              But it's not just the lure of Santa Claus and festive celebrations that attract visitors from Asia. \u003cbr/\u003e              Although Christmas is not a public holiday in China, it is increasingly recognised as a religious and commercial event.\u003cbr/\u003e              30-year-old bank clerk Wang Yin travelled to Finland with her husband in 2016.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Compared to China, Lapland has a rather vast territory with a really small population,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I have experienced sea fishing at Lake Inari, and basically, there was only me and the tour guide on the lake. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Afterwards I joined a Northern Lights tour, and I did see the Northern Lights. That is an advantage.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Even one of the newest additions to Lapland's hotel scene bears the influence of growing interest from Asia.\u003cbr/\u003e              Not far from Santa Claus Village, Rovaniemi's new Nova Skyland Hotel claims to be the first of its kind in Finland to be backed by Chinese investors.\u003cbr/\u003e              The six million euro (approx. $7.1 million USD) development, set in 28,000 square metres of Nordic forest, opened in October.\u003cbr/\u003e              The lodges are home to so-called 'Forest View Suites,' with kitchen, living room, panoramic windows and outdoor terrace.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"They come here, and they can stay maybe a week, they can cook themselves and they can relax. It's not like only a typical hotel room,\" says deputy director manager Tian Zhang.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"For the Asian customers, I think they like to stay in like a traditional Finnish home.
