Martine Stilwell hopes to offer the children an excellent education to make up for all the school time they...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eA 79-year-old Canadian woman decided to use her own money to set up a school for Syrian refugee children in Jordan.\u003cbr/\u003e              Martine Stilwell hopes to offer the children an excellent education to make up for all the school time they have missed out on.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              Like any school playground, children are having fun in between classes.\u003cbr/\u003e              But for these Syrian refugees, the chance of an education and a space to play is extra special.\u003cbr/\u003e              In 2014, retired Canadian psychiatrist Martine Stilwell decided to use some personal inheritance to help Syrian refugee children in Jordan. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"I was concerned about the Syrian children. And I was lucky, I had a good education. I wanted other children to have one, too. So it's just a good thing to do,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e              After struggling to find backing from a major charity, Stilwell joined forces with humanitarian Catherine Ashcroft and a non-governmental organisation called The Syria Fund.\u003cbr/\u003e              They set up an education centre in Azraq, a poor, rural village where close to half the population are Syrian refugees. \u003cbr/\u003e              One of the most valuable classes for the children are the English lessons.\u003cbr/\u003e              Teacher Osraa al-Chichani says it is more than what children can get at other schools in the area.\u003cbr/\u003e              Many of these children have been out of school for up to three years.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I call this our 'keep-up, catch-up school'. So we keep up and we catch up the children as much as we can,\" says Stilwell.\u003cbr/\u003e              Children of all ages learn English, Arabic reading and writing, IT as well as arts classes.\u003cbr/\u003e              Today, music teacher Owais al-Omari is teaching the children how to play the recorder.\u003cbr/\u003e              He says that with so many activities, the children develop faster than at other schools.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"They love our school more than government school,\" he says proudly.\u003cbr/\u003e              The school makes a concerted effort to offer the pupils as much as possible.\u003cbr/\u003e              There are theatre festivals and day trips to local attractions. \u003cbr/\u003e              Staff offer training to local teachers, and are opening the doors to children with disabilities. \u003cbr/\u003e              Today, the school is in its fourth year. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Our aim is excellence in education as much as we can, and also to give enrichment as much as we can to the children because a lot of them have missed out so much,\" says Stilwell.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Azraq does not have very much around here for enrichment so we are just hoping to, in any way we can, make their lives richer and give them quality education.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Speaking with the local chief of charities, it seems that such a set up works for the whole neighbourhood.\u003cbr/\u003e              Noof al-Fayez says that as more and more Syrian refugee families moved into the area, the public schools began to get overcrowded.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"This was a problem facing everyone. So we, in co-operation with Martine, opened this school.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              It operates a bus to bring children in from isolated areas, and delivers classes to around 100 children every morning. \u003cbr/\u003e              Children attend Jordanian schools for a couple of hours in the afternoon. \u003cbr/\u003e              But Stilwell hopes to incorporate the local Jordanian children into her own school one day.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"That's my dream.
