A group of archaeologists and officials are raising...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Hundreds of historic sites in Lima are being crowded out and sometimes destroyed to meet the demands of the Peruvian capital's growing population. \u003cbr/\u003e              A group of archaeologists and officials are raising public awareness and trying to preserve the sites, which have little government protection. \u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              From a bird's eye view, the situation is dramatic. \u003cbr/\u003e              High-rise apartment buildings tower around this historic site in Peru's capital.\u003cbr/\u003e              Lima's nearly 10 million residents compete for space with ruins like this one in the district of Miraflores.  \u003cbr/\u003e              These sites are known locally as \"huacas,\" an indigenous Quechua word meaning \"oracle\" or \"sacred place\".\u003cbr/\u003e              These crumbling ruins are remnants of the vast empire that flourished here more than six centuries ago.\u003cbr/\u003e              But now, the capital's growing population means new roads, neighbourhoods, universities and even a sports stadium are being built right next to, or even through, historical sites.\u003cbr/\u003e              Archaeologist at the Bellavista huaca ruins, Roxana Gómez, says most of the huacas have already been encroached upon by the growing city. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"In Lima many archaeological remains have been conserved, such as what we have here in (Ruinas) Bellavista and somehow have been reduced in their original dimensions. In the case of Bellavista la Huaca occupied a greater extension and we can see in the areas we have excavated, as the structures (of the ruins) extend below the tracks, from the sidewalks, that it was a much larger archaeological site.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              There are an estimated 46,000 precolonial sites in Peru. \u003cbr/\u003e              Some 400 are located in Lima, which is the capital city with the largest number of precolonial archaeological sites in South America. \u003cbr/\u003e              But Peru spends enough to protect just one percent of these archaeological sites, according to official data. \u003cbr/\u003e              With little oversight and government money, hundreds of ruins are abandoned or relegated to being public rubbish dumps. \u003cbr/\u003e              The push to save the country's rich heritage isn't widely embraced by Peruvians, many of whom were born and raised among the Incan ruins built before the Spanish colonised South America. \u003cbr/\u003e              A small group of archaeologists and officials are trying to raise public awareness and preserve the sites that are feeling the squeeze of urban sprawl.\u003cbr/\u003e              Since July (2017), on every first Sunday of the month, the government has been opening its archaeological sites and museums free of charge.\u003cbr/\u003e              The deputy minister of heritage says their aim is to show Peruvians that their heritage is something to be enjoyed. \u003cbr/\u003e              Clide Valladolid Huaman, an archaeologist at Huaca Puruchuco, says there is a conflict between preserving these sites and the growing population who need somewhere to live. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Lima has still been saved (from land invasions), now those spaces are being seen with population growth, by people who need (a place to) live. \"\u003cbr/\u003e              Lima's first urban explosion began in the 20th century, accompanied by the greatest destruction of precolonial sites. \u003cbr/\u003e              The walls of one temple were pulverized to make bricks for new homes. \u003cbr/\u003e              In the 1980s, Guerrilla fighters used dynamite to attack an electric tower, taking with it a pyramid used as its base. \u003cbr/\u003e              Back in 2015, police in Lima clashed with residents during the eviction of thousands of people who had illegally occupied a cemetery dating from the pre-Inca era.\u003cbr/\u003e              Police fired tear gas in their attempt to disperse a two-thousand strong crowd who had taken over Tablada de Lurin, a 21-hectare archaeological zone owned by the state.\u003cbr/\u003e              Some ruins are even used as public spaces where events are held, such as dances and concerts. \u003cbr/\u003e              Peruvians are used to living alongside historic sites dating back thousands of years. \u003cbr/\u003e              But archaeologists are hoping that by promoting the city's rich archaeological heritage, they might encourage people to think twice about how they treat them.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Lima, Peru November 15, 2017  \u003cbr/\u003e               ++AERIAL SHOTS (MUTE) ++\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
