And when her films weren't ahead of the curve, they were recreating the existing one.\u003cbr/\u003e              And yet, acceptance by the establishment of filmmaking establishments, the motion-picture academy,  meant a lot to Varda. She received an honorary Academy Award for her seven-decade body of work – from documentaries to fiction features, as well as short subjects -- Saturday (11 NOVEMBER 2017) in Los Angeles.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I'm delighted,\" she said before entering the Ray Dolby Ballroom for the ceremony. \"Because what's happening has a connection with what cinema means to me. And this is not making business. This is not making money, but being recognized as defending the art of movies, which includes documentaries and fiction films. And I've always, in the meaning of sharing, discovering and sharing emotion, information, passion.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I try to tell stories and documentaries in a very honest way,\" she continued. \"So that, it fills me, and it fills other people (with) pleasure and meaning. I think that's what I try to do: have empathy for people.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Other honorees included cinematographer Owen Roizman (\"The French Connection,\" \"The Exorcist\") who posed for photos from his wheelchair, but opted against speaking with press. \u003cbr/\u003e              Also honored was actor Donald Sutherland (\"M*A*S*H,\" \"Ordinary People\") who noted, simply, that the Oscar was \"everything, and perfect. In other words, what it means: It means everything. And how I feel is just perfect,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003e              Director Charles Burnett (\"Killer of Sheep,\" \"To Sleep with Anger\") has a filmography stuffed with socially conscious stories of primarily, but not exclusively, African-American life -- often underscoring the ties binding his characters to those of viewers of all colors from all places.\u003cbr/\u003e              While he never produced a blockbuster, he's been a full-time filmmaker for 40 years and has strong, dedicated and diverse fan base.\u003cbr/\u003e              Still, Burnett was stunned to get the call about the Oscar from Academy president John Bailey.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"He said, 'Do you know what this call is about?' And I said, 'I don't,'\" Burnett recalled, continuing, \"and he said, 'Well, we nominated you, well, not nominated, but the Board of Governors gave you the Academy Award.' And I didn't believe it. Because, 'Why?' I didn't have a film in competition or anything like that. And he said, 'No. Truly. We gave you an honorary Academy Award.' And I said, 'Really?' It's kind of hard to process that. And I said, 'Yeah, right,' so to speak.
