They cast dancing reflections across the white walls.\u003cbr/\u003e              The modernist museum, designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, sits under a honeycombed dome of eight layers of Arab-style geometric shapes.\u003cbr/\u003e              It draws the lapping waters of the Persian Gulf into its outer corridors. At night, light inside pours out like tiny little stars from a salt shaker against the city's skyline. \u003cbr/\u003e              Nouvel says his inspiration was \"the sky, a random system of the stars itself\". \u003cbr/\u003e              He wanted to allow shards of sunshine into enter the building \"just a little bit, kind of a rain of light\".\u003cbr/\u003e              And under this dome is an array of precious objects.\u003cbr/\u003e              The Louvre's counterpart in Paris is famously home to the Mona Lisa.\u003cbr/\u003e              Here in Abu Dhabi, another of Leonardo da Vinci's ladies graces the walls - 'Portrait of a Woman, called La Belle Ferronniere'.\u003cbr/\u003e              The woman in the painting, thought to be Lucrezia Crivelli a mistress of the Duke of Milan Ludovico Sforza, pierces the viewer with her gaze. The painting is on loan from the Louvre Paris for one year only. \u003cbr/\u003e              Only about 15 artworks exist of the Renaissance master. \u003cbr/\u003e              Many of the greats of European art are represented here: Degas' ballet sculptures, Van Gough, Monet and Picasso.\u003cbr/\u003e              But Jean-Luc Martinez, President-Director of Louvre Paris, insists it is \"not a European museum, and it's not the European point of view\". \u003cbr/\u003e              \"It's placed to see the world from Abu Dhabi. So of course here we are a bridge between Asia, Africa, and Europe, so this meeting point here, this bridge, it's very important to understand the world of today.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Looking back and toward the future, encompassing both East and West, is a theme that extends throughout the new museum, which is opening to the public on Saturday after a decade of delays and questions over labourers' rights.\u003cbr/\u003e              The conservative mores of Abu Dhabi - the UAE capital that's more buttoned-up than freewheeling Dubai - can be seen in the relative absence of pieces depicting nudity. Still, artwork at the new Louvre offers a brief history of the world and its major religions, not shying away from Judaism in a country that officially does not recognise Israel.\u003cbr/\u003e              The museum began acquiring works in 2009 and currently has more than 620 pieces and artefacts. \u003cbr/\u003e              But only 235 from its own collection will be displayed at the time of the opening. The rest of the pieces are on loan, with 300 artworks coming from 13 leading French museums.\u003cbr/\u003e              One of the first artworks a visitor sees is a two-headed Neolithic statue from Jordan, one of the oldest known in human history.\u003cbr/\u003e              The museum also makes a point to put the world's religions side by side. \u003cbr/\u003e              In one exhibit, a painted French stone statue of the Virgin and Child stands by a section of a Syrian Quran dating to around 1250, open to a page recounting the night during the holy month of Ramadan when Muslims believe the holy book was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. \u003cbr/\u003e              A Jewish funerary stele from France in 1250 sits next to a Tunisian Muslim's funerary steel and a Christian archbishop's stone epitaph from Tyre, Lebanon.\u003cbr/\u003e              In a darkened room, a page from the Blue Quran, one of the oldest ever found, is placed near a Gothic Bible, Buddhist sutras and a Torah from Yemen dating to 1498.\u003cbr/\u003e              For now at least, the museum's exhibit ends with a commissioned installation by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei called \"A Foundation of Light,\" an illuminated work of steel and glass that recalls the museum's gleam at night.\u003cbr/\u003e              Authorities first announced the Louvre Abu Dhabi project in 2007 as Dubai feverishly built the world's tallest building and other wonders.\u003cbr/\u003e              Today, much of Saadiyat Island, envisioned as a cultural district anchored by the museum, is still empty. A planned Middle East outpost of the Guggenheim remains unbuilt, with just a poured foundation on the salt flood plain.\u003cbr/\u003e              Part of the reason is the drop in global energy prices from over 100 US dollars a barrel in 2014 to around 30 dollars in early 2016. Officials in Abu Dhabi have not disclosed how much it cost to build the museum.\u003cbr/\u003e              What is known is that Abu Dhabi agreed to pay France 525 million US dollars for the use of the \"Louvre\" name for the next 30 years and six months, plus another 750 million dollars to hire French managers to oversee the 300 loaned works of art.
