Millions of women unknowingly carry a bacteria which can be passed on in pregnancy and later...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              There are calls for the development of a vaccine to help prevent the death of thousands of newborn babies. \u003cbr/\u003e              Millions of women unknowingly carry a bacteria which can be passed on in pregnancy and later cause life threatening illness. \u003cbr/\u003e              Doctors try to treat infected mother and babies with antibiotics, but this has limited impact. \u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              Two years ago Palesa Mogaswa and her husband left hospital with their newborn daughter.\u003cbr/\u003e              What they didn't know is that Mogaswa was a carrier of Group B Streptococcus (GBS). It had infected their baby girl and later caused her death.\u003cbr/\u003e              Mogaswa's first birth of her baby son, now aged four, went well and he happily attends this nursery in Johannesburg with the other children.\u003cbr/\u003e              Now Mogaswa is pregnant again and set to give birth in December.\u003cbr/\u003e              She is determined to ensure her new baby does not have the same experience as her daughter.\u003cbr/\u003e              Mogaswa remembers that within days the baby's health had deteriorated.\u003cbr/\u003e              She says: \"The baby that night cried the whole night, she was crying, we didn't understand what was going on, but then we though maybe it was too hot for her. So we just cooled her off like with towels, we wrapped her with a wet towel and then we sat with her. In the morning when I woke up she started changing colour, she changed colour, the colour went purple, yellowish on the eyes, she was not blinking, not breathing very well.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The terrified parents took their daughter to hospital.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"They told us she's going to go to ICU (intensive care unit) and then they explained that she's..,\" says Mogaswa as she breaks down. \u003cbr/\u003e              Mogaswa's baby had meningitis and later died.\u003cbr/\u003e              Professor Shabir Madhi from South Africa's National Institute for Communicable Diseases is one of the many researchers who've been contributing to a global report on GBS.\u003cbr/\u003e              He says many women like Mogaswa don't know they carry GBS.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"In fact in Africa up to one third of every three pregnant women will actually be colonised with Group B strep. Now the reason why that's important is because when a woman is colonised with Group B strep, there the risk of both the foetus becoming infected, the mother actually actually delivering a still birth, or alternatively that could be strep, a bacteria can actually be passed on to the newborn and the newborn itself might actually develop severe disease and the type of severe disease we're talking about is bloodstream infections as well as infections that are on the brain, which is what we call meningitis,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              The report \"The Worldwide Burden of Group B Streptococcus for Pregnant Women Stillbirths and Children\" was coordinated by lead author Professor Joy Lawn from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Diseases.\u003cbr/\u003e              It argues a maternal GBS vaccine with 80 per cent efficacy and 90 per cent coverage would prevent almost a quarter of a million mother and child GBS cases, 41,000 stillbirths, and 66,000 infant deaths globally.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"When babies get this organism it kills them. It's a very high risk condition causing septicaemia and meningitis in babies and a lot of the focus up until now has been on what happens to those babies. What's new about this research is that we have seen that Group B streptococcus is carried by 21.7 million women around the world and it has consequences for them, for their babies that we knew before, but also for babies before they are born, so still births, this is also an important cause of still births and that for children who've had this condition and survived it's also a cause of disability,\" says Lawn.\u003cbr/\u003e              Screening is difficult in many countries and using more antibiotics is also not a good long term solution at a time when medical authorities around the world are warning that our diseases are becoming resistant to the drugs because of their overuse.\u003cbr/\u003e              Lawn says: \"There are a number of different approaches with vaccines and one critical point is also you have different serotypes of the organisms and they may vary a little bit by region, so in this work that we've just published this is the first systematic look including hundreds of thousands of different samples to say what are those different serotypes and what we found is that with a vaccine that would cover the five most common serotypes you would address 96 per cent of the burden globally.
