Microdots which are usually used as a security mark on precious metals are now...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Technology is helping to solve an age old problem for Britain's farmers - how to stop people from stealing their livestock.\u003cbr/\u003e              Microdots which are usually used as a security mark on precious metals are now being added to the paint farmers use to mark their sheep - meaning an animal's origins are always traceable.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              It's an issue that has troubled Britain's farmers even before Little Bo Peep lost her sheep.\u003cbr/\u003e              For hundreds of years rustlers, working mostly in the dead of night, have been plundering flocks of sheep across the country.\u003cbr/\u003e              The effect on farmers, who operate on tight profit margins, is often financially devastating.\u003cbr/\u003e              North Yorkshire sheep farmer Jonathan Murray says every one of his colleagues in the area has lost animals to rustlers.\u003cbr/\u003e              Murray realised he had a problem when his lambs and ewes would go missing while they were out in the hills.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Lambs were going out with the ewes in the spring and a percentage, often in the order of 10 percent, were not coming back. And it was more than natural losses and problems with road deaths on the common land around here. I got suspicious when the carcasses weren't in sight. And, it's apparent there was something amiss really,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003e              Murray's Brownhill farm is part of a community watch programme with farmers holding frequent patrols to protect their flocks from thieves.\u003cbr/\u003e              The land is also monitored by CCTV cameras, but policing the hills against rustlers in the dark of night is extremely difficult.\u003cbr/\u003e              Murray has tried several ideas to protect his flock, but was left frustrated as his losses continued.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I tried various strategies of increasing the marking, tagging lambs when they went out into the moor, tagging them close to birth so that there was identification on the lambs. The ewes have got home burns on as well to increase the likelihood of them coming back so its very hard to remove. We tried gathering them earlier and earlier so the lambs were spending less and less time on the moor to reduce the likelihood of them disappearing. All of these things helped but didn't seem to totally eradicate a problem that was still apparent.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              In spring this year Murray started testing new forensic microdot technology that had been developed by former detective, John Minary.\u003cbr/\u003e              The technology had been used on precious metals but Minary had also developed a version that could be painted onto sheep, called Tectracer. \u003cbr/\u003e              The microdots cost pennies (cents) per sheep and can be mixed into the marking paint already used on animals.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It works by being able to trace the sheep back to the home farm. The innovation actually - partnership with North Yorkshire police. They came to us because we had been working in metal theft and asked us the question is there anything you can do to help with the sheep rustling problem that there is across North Yorkshire. The North Yorkshire Rural Task Force have got that as one of their priorities and we are\u003cbr/\u003e              only too pleased to put our minds to solving what has been a centuries old problem,\" says Tectracer founder, Minary. \u003cbr/\u003e              The codes on the microdots are kept on a database.\u003cbr/\u003e              When a sheep is reported missing an alert is sent via text message to auctioneers, neighbours, meat traders and the police.\u003cbr/\u003e              Minary says he developed the microdot technology after more than three decades of taking on organised crime gangs in the north of England.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We came up with the innovation of actually impregnating the existing marking fluids with thousands of tiny coded microdots which become entangled in the fleeces of the animals and will stay with the animals, creating a deterrent, a deterrent against theft. If the animals are taken from their home farm, we now have got a way of identifying them back to the home farm and that creates a really strong deterrent against stealing the animals.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              A report by insurer NFU Mutual says livestock theft cost the United Kingdom 2.2 million pounds in 2016.\u003cbr/\u003e              However, police say many livestock theft cases go unreported because it can take weeks for farmers to realise their stock has been stolen from remote areas. \u003cbr/\u003e              Scotland's National Rural Crime Coordinator, Inspector Jane Donaldson says the majority of livestock theft cases involve sheep rustling.\u003cbr/\u003e              She says gangs are highly skilled and have the specialised equipment needed to do the job. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"When you talking of tens and hundreds of animals being stolen, that has to be done by people within the industry, who have the skills, the knowledge and the equipment to be able to round up that many animals, transport them and then either re-house them in their own flocks, so retag them and pass them off as their own animals or to pass them legitimately through a market or an abattoir because these animals are going into the food chain.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Apart from forensic microdots, the police are currently testing various tracing technologies like tags that are inserted into the bolus of the animal.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We are really keen to engage with organisations that are using technology for prevention throughout crime but particularly for\u003cbr/\u003e              livestock theft,\" Donaldson says.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"The issue we have obviously is these animals are, well first of all they are animals, so they are living beings things and so there are certain things you wouldn't want to do to a living thing that you would do to a building or a vehicle.
