Fleeing ethnic violence in their southeast Asian homeland, his wife and their three children drowned at sea. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Why did I bring my children here and let them die in the water?\" he said as he sat before his hut. \"I can't sleep thinking of it all.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              For Jafar and tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees, sprawling camps like this one on the southern tip of Bangladesh have become cramped, but safe havens from the persecution they left behind in neighboring Myanmar. \u003cbr/\u003e              More than a half million Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar since Buddhist mobs and government soldiers began torching villages in late August. To escape the flames, Jafar -- like many others -- took to the water.\u003cbr/\u003e              Flotillas of wooden fishing boats have ferried weary refugees across the Naf River into Bangladesh. \u003cbr/\u003e              Carrying his two-month-old twins in rice sacks slung over his shoulder, Jafar led his wife and their seven-year-old son across the mountains and through forest to the coast.  \u003cbr/\u003e              \"We just kept following people walking ahead of us,\" he said. \"We didn't know where we were going. Everyone from the village took that route. So, we did, too.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The six-mile journey normally takes about two hours. \u003cbr/\u003e              But the 20-foot boat carrying the family strayed off course in the darkness and drifted out into the open sea. What had promised to be a short voyage turned into an 18-hour nightmare. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"People were groaning, crying, and reciting their final prayers,\" he said. \"They had a hope, that maybe Allah will come save us.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Just as they came within sight of land, a wave capsized the boat. \u003cbr/\u003e              Jafar had tied baby Noor and her twin brother Yasin to his chest. His wife, who could swim, took hold of their seven-year-old son, Mohamed.\u003cbr/\u003e              For a half hour, Jafar floated on his back, trying to keep the twins' heads above water. But the strain was too much.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"My children were pulling me under the water with their weight,\" he said. \"We were all going to drown. When I realized I was going to drown, I had to untie (my robe) and let them go.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Jafar could hear Mohamed screaming for help. He was about ten feet from his son and wife when a wave crashed over them, and they disappeared.\u003cbr/\u003e              People on the Bangladeshi shore helped gather the living and the dead. Of the 80 or so passengers on the boat, only 24 survived. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"I told my father, `Baba. We had come here to save our lives, but we have lost our lives after coming here,'\" the 23-year-old wreck survivor said. \"How can it be possible that my child, my mother, and my sister, are all gone?\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The United Nations is calling the flight of the Rohingya the largest and fastest human exodus in Asia since the Vietnam War. This wreck is the single deadliest incident of that migration.\u003cbr/\u003e              Jafar and the other dazed survivors were processed at the Bangladeshi fishing port of Cox's Bazar. then transferred to the refugee camp.\u003cbr/\u003e              Jafar is not completely alone. His shelter adjoins the one his brother built for his own family. \u003cbr/\u003e              Jafar's wife and children sleep nearby in a mass grave. But the husband and father cannot rest.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"... wherever I look, I see my kids,\" he said. \"I see my eldest child every day. He comes and sits in front of me even now.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              He sometimes thinks he should return to Myanmar and kill himself. His faith is the only thing stopping him.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"This was my fate, I guess,\" he said. \"I don't know.
