The stars of the sale will be two Persian portraits...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Works of art from the Islamic world, as well as by contemporary Middle Eastern artists, will go under the hammer at Sotheby's in London next week.\u003cbr/\u003e              The stars of the sale will be two Persian portraits estimated at one million pounds each.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              Precious art lines the gallery walls of the renowned auction house Sotheby's in London.\u003cbr/\u003e              It's hosting a sale of art from the Islamic World and the jewels in the crown are these two portraits.\u003cbr/\u003e              They've been dated to the 17th century and are believed to have come from Isfahan in Persia, now Iran, and are expected to fetch up to one million pounds each at auction.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"These paintings very, very infrequently appear on the market. In fact, there are only about 15 all together, most of which are in museums and one or two left in private collections,\" says Benedict Carter, Director and Head of Auction Sales for the Middle East for Sotheby's.\u003cbr/\u003e              The intricate details and style of the portraits show clear European influences.\u003cbr/\u003e              Carter says they are definitely a pair, painted to go together. But much of their origin is a mystery.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"There's quite a lot still we don't know about these paintings but that they're very likely to be betrothal paintings or paintings of possibly on the occasion of someone's wedding,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              Other stand out lots in the auction include a late 16th century Ottoman fabric panel, estimated at 80,000 to 120,000 pounds.\u003cbr/\u003e              And there are some eye-catchingly unusual items on display.\u003cbr/\u003e              These shoes set with mother-of pearl and believed to have originated in Egypt or Turkey in the 18th or 19th century.\u003cbr/\u003e              The auction will take place on 25 October.\u003cbr/\u003e              But buyers with more modern tastes need not despair.\u003cbr/\u003e              Sotheby's is also holding a sale of 20th century art from the Middle East.\u003cbr/\u003e              Interest is growing in the paintings and sculptured from the region, so artists like Greek-Egyptian Antoine Malliarakis Mayo are enjoying a resurgence.\u003cbr/\u003e              Sotheby's Deputy Director for Contemporary and Modern Arab and Iranian Art, Ashkan Baghestani, says the late painter was part of an important artistic movement.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"In Egypt it was called the 'Art and Liberty Movement'. Mayo was a an active member of that art movement,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"The idea was, at a time where Europe was going through a lot of uncertainty, the rise of facism, the rise of nazism, these artists were telling the intellectuals, the artists of Europe 'come to Egypt, it's a free country, come explore, come talk with us. You'll be free to express you art and yourself here.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              But until recently, Mayo was relatively unknown. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"What always shocked me is an incredible and such a high quality work by artists like Mayo, they got lost the past 40, 50 years and you don't understand why the quality is there, the historical reference is there,\" says Baghestani.\u003cbr/\u003e              More well-known artists are also in the auction, including this mirror ball by Iranian Monir Farmanfarmaian in her signature mirrored mosaic style, and a sculpture by revered Egyptian artist Mahmoud Mokhtar.\u003cbr/\u003e              Baghestani says there is \"so much room for growth\" in the Middle Eastern art market.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It's just a question of time and having the right exposure.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The 20th century art auction takes place on 23 October.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              London, UK - 20 October 2017\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
