But while many have dreamt of coming home, the reality is far from perfect.         ...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Nearly two years after it was retaken from Islamic State militants, people are finally beginning to return to Sinjar. \u003cbr/\u003e              But while many have dreamt of coming home, the reality is far from perfect.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              A family's belongings are crammed onto the back of a small truck.\u003cbr/\u003e              Haider Said Khadr, his brother and their families have travelled back from the mountains where they took refuge three years ago.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It was very cold up on the mountain and we were living in tents and it was dirty. We were exposed to all kinds of weather - rain, sun and even snow. There were no schools and the kids missed their school year. There was no electricity, the aid didn't reach us.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              They are one of many who have decided to return to their homes, having fled from the grip of the Islamic State group.\u003cbr/\u003e              The city at the foot of the Sinjar mountain in northern Iraq was abandoned in August 2014 when IS attacked.\u003cbr/\u003e              Soon after, it turned into a battleground between the extremists and Kurdish fighters.\u003cbr/\u003e              The proximity of IS and political infighting between Kurdish factions meant that neither services nor security were properly restored after November 2015 when the town was retaken.\u003cbr/\u003e              Now, about a quarter of the district's 250,000 population have returned, including several thousand people to the city itself, according to the mayor's office.\u003cbr/\u003e              But conditions in Sinjar are also difficult for the returning families.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"First of all, there is no electricity here, either. And it is freezing in the winter and we don't have kerosene. And also, there are no food rations here and there are no aid organisations in the city of Sinjar either. We used to get that up on the mountain but once you move down to the city they cut you off. So we hope they will open an office here,\" says Said Khadr.\u003cbr/\u003e              The municipal government hasn't restored the electricity network and there is not much water, either. \u003cbr/\u003e              And there is no school, except in the town of Sinuni on the other side of the mountain.\u003cbr/\u003e              In Sinjar, there is no shortage of reminders of what has occurred over the last few years.\u003cbr/\u003e              Buildings are destroyed, power lines are down, but still people are slowly trying to piece their lives back together.\u003cbr/\u003e              However, deputy mayor of Sinjar, Jalal Khalaf, thinks the town's redevelopment is being held back by a lack of support from the Iraqi government.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"They've been focused on projects in Ba'aj and Tel Afar, liberated only a month ago. They care more about them than Sinjar. Due to the political disagreements and the distance, the central government ignores these areas.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              But Sinjar is not under Iraqi control - it is held by the forces of the Kurdish regional government, which wants it to be part of a future independent Kurdish state. \u003cbr/\u003e              Meanwhile, on the ground, people are just wanting to gain access to the most basic of necessities.\u003cbr/\u003e              Zarif Haji says she and her family are forced to drink from local wells, which may or may not be clean, because their building's water tank isn't big enough.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We stayed for three years in tents and decided that enough was enough and we came back to Sinjar. And it's 10-15 days that we've been back now. No doors, no windows, no water, no electricity, nothing. No services.
