They are producing ethanol from agave plants, the base ingredient in the...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN: \u003cbr/\u003e              Scientists in Mexico are developing an alternative biofuel that can power cars using the leftovers from the tequila industry.\u003cbr/\u003e              They are producing ethanol from agave plants, the base ingredient in the nation's famous alcoholic tipple.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              This blue liquid could be the future of biofuels.\u003cbr/\u003e              Mexican scientist Leopoldo Javier Rios Gonzalez at Coahuila Autonomous University is so confident in its quality, that he pours the liquid straight into a car's fuel tank.\u003cbr/\u003e              The fuel is produced from the waste products of one of the country's most well-known alcoholic drinks - tequila.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"During the past six years, we have developed production technology on this biofuel based in lechuguilla agave and scraps from the tequila industry,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              In that time, they have manufactured the biofuel so that it is capable of fuelling a car.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"The efficiency is very similar to gasoline, and can be even better if you find the ideal mix (ethanol/gasoline) which can be somewhere between 10 and 30 percent,\" says Rios.\u003cbr/\u003e              The leaves and the bagasse (pulpy residue) of the agave plant are usually just rubbish to the tequila industry. \u003cbr/\u003e              But Rios and his team think that their biofuel formula could be revolutionary.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It is important to produce combustible ethanol from scraps or bagasse of the tequilana weber agave plant for three reasons: we are using something that is garbage; because of the high amount of sugars in this material; and the tequila industry has a new window (of opportunity).\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Agave based fuel produces 30 to 40 percent fewer emissions than gasoline.\u003cbr/\u003e              It is made by hydrolysis and an accelerated fermentation process applied to the scraps. \u003cbr/\u003e              Rios says it is a \"second generation fuel as opposed to the ethanol produced from sugar cane or corn.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The product was developed in a joint venture between the Coahuila University and Guadalajara based company Fuel Flex Mexico. \u003cbr/\u003e              It started back in 2012 as a way to give some use to the agave lechuguilla plant, a close cousin of the plant used to produce tequila, and a very common variety in the northern state of Coahuila. \u003cbr/\u003e              Beginning as a research project for the university, when Fuel Flex got involved they took the project in a different direction, obtaining bio-ethanol from Tequilana Weber Agave leaf scraps. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Right now we are selling it as an additive. A sustainable and green product than can be mixed with gasoline in a 20-50 percent rate,\" says Max Urtusuastegui, CEO of Fuel Flex Mexico.\u003cbr/\u003e              Tequilana Weber agave bagasse has three times more sugar than the Lechuguilla variety. \u003cbr/\u003e              Today, flex fuel prepared vehicles can use 50 percent ethanol, but agave bio-ethanol could be used at 100 percent on flex fuel, and 30 percent in non flex fuel automobiles, reducing costs and pollution.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Actually our sales have grown by up to 500 percent in the past two years because of the uprising (price) of fossil fuels, and people have started to accept the product,\" says Urtusuastegui.\u003cbr/\u003e              Jesus Arroyo, director for Natural Fibres and Biofuel at the Mexican Agriculture and Cattle Secretariat, says they have evidence to suggest this agave-produced ethanol is already working for tequila factories in Jalisco State.\u003cbr/\u003e              He says it is important to use the scraps and leaves to produce alcohol that can be used on an industrial scale.\u003cbr/\u003e              And for the customer?\u003cbr/\u003e              These car owners seem to be receptive to the new biofuel - providing it doesn't harm their cars.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Saltillo, Mexico - 9 August 2017 \u003cbr/\u003e              1.
