The Google Lunar X Prize is a race to land a privately...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEAD IN : \u003cbr/\u003e              A team of young engineers and space scientists in India are vying to send the first private mission to the moon, and claim a $30 million prize. \u003cbr/\u003e              The Google Lunar X Prize is a race to land a privately funded robotic spacecraft on the lunar surface by the end of March 2018. \u003cbr/\u003e              \u003cbr/\u003e              STORY-LINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              This little rover is ready for adventure. \u003cbr/\u003e              It is a lunar rover that is under going tests here on earth.\u003cbr/\u003e              One day this tiny robot may land on the surface of the moon, sending back high-definition pictures to earth, if all goes well at TeamIndus, India's first and only private space technology company.\u003cbr/\u003e              Located in Bengaluru, TeamIndus was formed in 2011 to be a part of the Google Lunar XPrize (GLXP).\u003cbr/\u003e              The Google Lunar X prize is a $30 million competition for the first private spacecraft to land softly on the moon, travel 500 metres and to send high-definition imagery back to earth.\u003cbr/\u003e              GLXP has set a deadline of March 2018 for teams to complete this mission and to compete for the prize.\u003cbr/\u003e              TeamIndus is India's only team to make it to the competition and is one of five finalists: the five teams are SpaceIL (Israel), Moon Express (US), Synergy Moon (International), TeamIndus (India), and HAKUTO (Japan). \u003cbr/\u003e              The company, in early 2015, won $1 million for demonstrating its landing technology from GLXP.\u003cbr/\u003e              The team simulated how the rover would work on the moon, by remotely controlling the rover and beaming videos captured by the rover on a projector.\u003cbr/\u003e              This is also the first team to invite the technical team at XPrize and an individual judging panel for a mission review.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"This week we are here with the XPrize Foundation and with our judges to really evaluate TeamIndus and see where they are technically,\" says Amanda Stiles, Director, XPRIZE Competitions, Space and New Frontiers.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We are in the process of looking at their technology and making sure that they are in the right trajectory for the moon,\" she adds.\u003cbr/\u003e              The five-day review by the panel of eminent space scientists and aerospace engineers drawn from some of the finest institutions from around the world also includes demonstrations of the mission hardware – the qualification models of the spacecraft and the moon rover known as ECA – as well as a simulation of the mooncast.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"They've created this very vibrant, dynamic, and now, very professional organization that really has a chance of doing something really crazy. I mean, this thing has always been an enormous challenge. It's a challenge for professionals, who've been doing this for years, you know, to soft-land on the moon. But now, they (TeamIndus) are, I would say within striking distance,\" says John Zarnecki, Director at the International Space Science Institute in Bern, Switzerland.\u003cbr/\u003e              TeamIndus has a commercial contract for a launch aboard ISRO's workhorse launch vehicle PSLV's XL variant.\u003cbr/\u003e              The Spacecraft will take off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, India. \u003cbr/\u003e              The PSLV will send the Spacecraft into an orbit 800 km x 70000 km above the surface of the earth. \u003cbr/\u003e              From there on, the spacecraft will set course to the moon by switching on its own engines in a series of complex orbital manoeuvres. \u003cbr/\u003e              The team hopes to land on the Moon, deploy the TeamIndus rover ECA and beam back high definition pictures before 31st March, 2018. \u003cbr/\u003e              Rahul Narayan, Co-founder and Tech Lead of TeamIndus says he is very confident about making it to the launchpad.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It will be a fairytale if we go all the way to the moon and win the prize.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The moon mission will cost over $60 million USD and TeamIndus has already raised half of it, and is looking for sponsorship to raise the other half.\u003cbr/\u003e              Japan's team, Hakuto, which is also one of the five finalists of GLXP, is hitching a ride on TeamIndus' spacecraft to put their rover on the moon.\u003cbr/\u003e              The scientific community believes that such endeavors democratize space exploration and also bring in innovative, low-cost technology to the world.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I am unashamedly a space scientists. So, for me, I want to see more and more measurements made in space – for example, on the surface of the moon, we want to know more about the moon. We've been there before but there's still a lot to find out. And also, the moon can also be a base for making measurements of the universe. You know, the lunar surface could be a great place for putting telescopes and detectors of various types.
