House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi on...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eDemocrats are renewing calls for gun safety legislation after the deadly mass shooting in Las Vegas, but their pleas are falling on deaf ears in the Republican-controlled Congress.\u003cbr/\u003e              House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi on Monday asked House Speaker Paul Ryan to create a select committee on gun violence to recommend legislation. \u003cbr/\u003e              Speaking before reporters Tuesday, Democrats seized on the violence in Nevada to demand tougher gun restrictions.\u003cbr/\u003e              Congressman Mike Thompson, the Chairman of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, said more people died in the Las Vegas shooting than in any one day in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Things are absolutely out of control,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003e              Democratic Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty, whose district includes the site of the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting, said that the American people, \"should demand that we take action,\" on gun control.\u003cbr/\u003e              Before the shooting that killed at least 59 people - the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history - House Republican leaders had been moving forward with bills to ease regulations on gun silencers and allow people with concealed-carry permits to take their weapons to other states.\u003cbr/\u003e              Republicans have been upbeat about prospects for legislation, but no votes on either bill were scheduled as of Monday and now it faces an uncertain future.\u003cbr/\u003e              House Speaker Paul Ryan ordered the flags of the Capitol to fly at half-staff, and issued a statement saying, \"The whole country stands united in our shock, in our condolences and in our prayers.\" \u003cbr/\u003e              Ryan, showing no interest in legislation to tighten up gun laws, said Tuesday, \"we cannot let the actions of a single person define us as a country.\" \u003cbr/\u003e              But no action was expected, as other mass shootings in Colorado, Connecticut, and Florida, and even attacks on lawmakers, failed to unite Congress on any legislative response. \u003cbr/\u003e              A bipartisan bill on background checks failed in the Senate four years ago, and since then Republicans have usually pointed to mental health legislation when questioned about the appropriate congressional response to gun violence.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Washington, DC - 3 October 2017\u003cbr/\u003e              ++AUDIO QUALITY AS INCOMING++\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
