We have Eastern bongo which are a critically endangered subspecies of bongo from Africa. We also have some sable antelope, common eland, giraffe, okapi – which, if you've never seen an okapi look up a picture. It's the most beautiful animal – and we also have some yellow-backed duikers,\" says Michelle Hatwood, the curator of The Alliance for Sustainable Wildlife.\u003cbr/\u003e              The breeding facility will also be home to six critically endangered Eastern Bongos. The subspecies is from one remote area in Kenya. According to Hatwood there are only 100 left in the wild, while North American zoos hold 550 of them.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"So, Audubon Nature Institute and San Diego Zoo Global came together and created the Alliance for Sustainable Wildlife. This is a first-of-it's-kind partnership to help the sustainability of some populations of wildlife in zoos that are not doing well. We only have so much room in zoos to hold animals, and you need a lot of animals to make sure your genetics are healthy, your demographics of those animals are healthy, and the alliance is a large piece of property that we're going to be housing and breeding a lot of these animals that really need the help,\" says Hatwood.\u003cbr/\u003e              The land, owned by The Audubon Institute and the Coast Guard, was used for 20 years by an Audubon project that focused on cloning and artificial insemination of endangered animals. \u003cbr/\u003e              The San Diego Zoo covered the $5.2 million cost for new site work, including the paddocks with solar-powered double gate. \u003cbr/\u003e              The two zoos are sharing a little more than $1 million a year in operating costs\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Yeah, so our giraffe enclosure, which also is going to have some antelope in it, is about 45 acres, so it's a very large space. Typical zoos, usually your giraffe enclosures have 10 acres or less, and you can't have as many giraffes when you have the smaller enclosures. But we can have a lot of giraffe in a 45-acre enclosure. They have to work a little bit harder because to get to their giraffe barn if, say, there's a storm coming, they have to walk a lot farther, so it's a little more work on the giraffe, but overall, it's going to be a great environment for them\" says Hatwood.\u003cbr/\u003e              More than four years after announcing plans for the project, the first animals have arrived and are settling in.\u003cbr/\u003e              The media was given a preview to the facility, which will not be open to public. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"So you know, zoos are very good at what we do. We breed a lot of these species that you saw here today. A lot of them came from other zoos, um, but to really change the long-term sustainability of the population, we're looking at what species we can work with to produce a greater number of good genetic, viable breeders for the future, to ensure that these populations are here for many decades to come\" says Hamilton.\u003cbr/\u003e              The bongo and duiker will move into a 12-acre (5-hectare) enclosure when its current occupants - eight eland and six sable antelope - move into a 45-acre (18-hectare) enclosure with the seven giraffes, including two who arrived pregnant.\u003cbr/\u003e              Most of the animals have been moved here from the San Diego Zoo and its safari park.\u003cbr/\u003e              The breeding facility's dual aim is to provide stock for zoos, which no longer collect hoofed stock from the wild, and to inspire other zoos to form similar collaborations\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              New Orleans, Louisiana – 26 September 2017\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
