The...\nLEAD IN: A disused government building in central Prague has found a new lease of life as a cultural venue. STORYLINE: These former 19th century military barracks have become an trendy spot to hangout near Prague's city centre. The Defense Ministry had no use for it and nobody was willing to buy. Its ownership was transferred to Justice Ministry which plans to turn it in office space in the long term. For now it has been leased by cultural developers and transformed into Kasarna Karlin, meaning barracks Karlin, a unique place for the public to socialise, enjoy sports, art and film. The lease is for three years, and the developers may have a chance to renew it. Martin Velek, Cultural Developer and Manager of Kasarna Karlin says: \"Even if it is temporary, we managed to turn a barracks that was closed to the public into a publicly open space that can be used during open hours by anyone, to enjoy a movie, to sit with friends, to enjoy sports. \" Despite busy streets nearby, it is surprisingly quiet. The din of traffic is dampened in the oversized interior courtyard by the six story tall buildings surrounding it on all sides. The space offers a chance to just relax over a cup of coffee or a pint of beer in beach chairs, or play ping pong or beach volleyball. Children can enjoy the playground or check out huge contemporary art objects, including a watch tower. The venue appeals to everyone, Velek says: \"We don't exclude anyone and I am really glad that you can see here that the visitors are from all of society.\" Concerts and movie screenings take place in the evenings. Organisers of the space intend to keep it open through the winter, moving film nights indoors and reopening the courtyard on warm days. Prague, Czech Republic - August 24th, 2017 1.
